The test is administered to students who do not speak English as a first language. More than two million students take the test every year. The results provide schools with information about ELL (English Language Learners) students’ English proficiency. The test is made of two parts with each part stretched over two days. The writing test, which makes up the first half of ACCESS, is taken in a group setting. The second part is the verbal test. This section is administered one on one with the student to see how well they speak English. The first half has taken place Tuesday, January 25th, and Wednesday, January 26th. The second half is taking place from Monday, January 31st to Friday, February 4th. Unlike most standardized testing, studying for ACCESS is not necessary. If someone wanted to study, they should practice demonstrating how they speak the English language. It is, however, a mandatory test for all ELL students.
