Since the hurricane is predicted to bring a tropical storm surge leading to flooding and power outages, DBHS canceled all after-school activities. Soon after, a county-wide announcement was issued on September 27th to close all schools on September 28th and 29th. Precautions are still in place now even though the city of Deerfield Beach wasn\u2019t hit too hard by the stormy weather. Although, other places weren\u2019t so fortunate. Hurricane Ian, being classified a category four hurricane, has already hit landfall in Cuba on Tuesday, September 27th killing at least two people and plunging the entire island populated with 11 million residents into flooded darkness. After, it was struck by heavy rainfall, winds faster than 45 mph, and intense lightning. Some places have been hit by tornadoes, causing extreme damage to homes. There have been hurricane warnings posted from Florida\u2019s most southern tip to Tarpon Springs. Cities that received the hurricane warning include Clearwater, Tampa, Sarasota, and Fort Myers. Weather stations predicted more of a tropical storm for Deerfield Beach with scattered showers and cloudy skies. Tornados warning were also issues for Broward County and surrounding areas. Luckily, there\u2019s minimal damage from the category four hurricane itself. On account of this, the homecoming dance has been moved to October 8th and spirit week from October 3rd to October 7th. To prepare for what hurricane Ian has in store, families stocked up on water, food, and toiletries as needed. Supplies like medicine and flashlights can help during this time. Staying indoors and away from windows or any glass doors and keeping all doors secure is the safest option when faced with large storms. Although the worst has passed there were multiple tornados that touched down in Broward County leaving behind damage. DBHS sends its thoughts and prayers to the individuals and families affected by this hurricane season.
