But another culture would start blossoming in America when anime began to find a large audience in the States.

Anime is a 2-D or computer-animated cartoon originating in Japan. While similar to American programs in its medium, anime takes on unique styles, plot structures, and character types that remain a signature to the country. In the 90s, anime like Sailor Moon, Neon Evangelion Genesis, and Cowboy Bebop would rise as a new genre of shows in America. Anime like Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z would impact the way cartoons looked further on. There are trademark shows dubbed as “Americanime”, a name for American cartoons that adopted the Japanese style like Teen Titans and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Another East Asian impact on the West is cuisine, which remains a heavily loved staple in American restaurants. From sushi to ramen, many enjoy these rich and flavorful dishes around the nation. When Japan opened again, many were astounded by the art and style that evolved and

cultivated throughout their years of solitude. A period of obsession by designers and artists would follow, and many would produce pieces heavily influenced by the country.

The culture and style of Japan would heavily spread in North America through an exhibit held in Philidelphia in 1876. One display presented an elegant Japanese house, while another showed a low-rise building glorified by a quaint garden. These displays were placed in the front of the exhibit, which attracted many who had a different view of Japan. Books would soon come out showing diagrams and explaining the architecture of the buildings while other Americans traveled across the globe to learn techniques about building and other forms of art.

Japan has presented Westerners with a plethora of rich cultures to honor, participate in, and enjoy.
