Educators often only receive chances to work in a classroom once their necessary diploma is achieved. But Deerfield Beach High School changes the game for those who want to practice their teaching endeavors further than the minimum. Future leaders can unlock their potential in the Urban Teacher Academy Program<\/a> (UTAP) held at DBHS. Students can actively participate in lessons taught to younger grade levels and learn more about the profession’s experience.<\/p>\nThe program trains candidates interested in becoming teachers<\/a> and building their leadership skills. Students are taught under experienced educators and prepared for college and potential occupations. The courses are planned to accommodate what working in a modern-day workplace would be like, as it advances and changes with time.<\/p>\n “UTAP has taught me how to handle myself while surrounded by others,” said senior UTAP Member Ezekiel Nguyen. “I feel more confident leading people in a group since joining.\u201d<\/p>\n The goal is to have members ready to take action by the end of the four-year program. More and more schools and other workplaces have adapted to using technology in their daily plans. Current students are instructed on how to utilize multimedia outlets for their professions and earn industry certifications.<\/p>\n “The program strives to educate DBHS students on not only how to be a great teacher but a commanding figure as well,” said Nguyen. “The leadership skills we build on are not limited to those who want to educate others as a career, such as management positions.”<\/p>\n Members have access to field experience, college and university tours, and supportive instructors who are prepared to shape students into the best leaders they can be. There are plenty of opportunities to gain hands-on teaching alongside professional educators in elementary and middle school classrooms. During the lessons, UTAP participants get prepared for higher education<\/a> using national achievement testing strategies.<\/p>\n Upon registration, availability for apprenticeships and scholarships opens. Scholarships are presented through involvement in the Future Educators of America (FEA). Students in UTAP also gain the advantage of being ahead of the curve with chances to view how today’s schools operate academically and socially.<\/p>\n “There are many benefits to being part of UTAP, like being taught by the Coordinator, Ms. Wilson, and making new friends,” said Nguyen. “I’m also looking forward to the special cord at graduation.”<\/p>\n Acceptance into UTAP follows a set of requirements. Applicants must have and maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) and score a level 3 on FSA in ELA or Math. Any counselor or the magnet office can provide additional information about applications<\/p>\n\n\n
