5 Things I Love About You

Best romance movies to watch

February marks the month of love and romance. On a usual basis, people often obsess over romantic gestures for their partner like dates and gifts. But sometimes staying inside on a cozy couch is a much better alternative. Here are the top five love-inducing movies, in no particular order, for significant others and even friends to watch together.

One of the highest-grossing movies from 1997, Titanic, is a worldwide classic. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack and Kate Winslet as Rose. Jack and Rose are of two different social classes but eventually fall in love aboard the Titanic at its untimely sinking. The Titanic mixes fiction and the historical events of the RMS Titanic to put together a melancholy romantic movie.

“I liked the scene where Jack and Rose were standing at the tip of the boat together, and Jack was holding onto Rose,” said DBHS junior Rebecca Jean. An infamous picture from the Titanic.

Another feature film, The Fault in Our Stars, is based on the book by John Green, which came out in the year 2014. It tells the story of Hazel Grace Lancaster, played by Shailene Woodley, and Augustus Waters, played by Ansel Elgort. Hazel is a cancer patient while Augustus is in her cancer support group. They find themselves to be very similar to one another and form a bond over books. Loving each other for who they are despite their health issues.

Before Sunrise is another film-favorite that was released in 1995. The story follows Jesse; an American played by Ethan Hawke and Celine; a French girl played by Julie Delpy that meet on a train bound for Vienna, Austria. They instantly connect as soon as they meet but there’s a forthcoming certainty that this will probably be the only time they have with each other. This movie is a staple for people that find fulfillment in the spontaneity of destined and passionate love.

Down to a topic that is parallel to the experience of DBHS, 10 Things I Hate About You is a 1999 American teen rom com film directed by Gil Junger and starring Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik. The screenplay is a modernization of William Shakespeare’s comedy The Taming of the Shrew, retold in a high school setting. For Bianca (Oleynik) to get around their father’s strict rules on dating, she must get her ill-tempered sister Kat (Stiles) to be in a relationship. Throughout the film, the audience sees two sisters each on the path of their own romantic fate.

“Kat really channels the reality of being a teenager in high school for me and hardships they both had to go through were relatable because I am a younger sister” said DBHS sophomore Jadyn Bosket.

Last but certainly not least, Five Feet Apart. It is a tragic slow burn of a romantic movie, starring Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse. Adjacent to the The Fault in Our Stars, this story is about a girl named Stella who has cystic fibrosis and lives her life in the hospital. She then meets a boy named Will, who has the same illness as her and they instantly connect. The only thing is, they must stay five feet apart and try to resist the urge to be close to one another, for both of their safety.

There are many movies to watch in times of nostalgic and fuzzy feelings, but these are by far the most watched by DBHS students in 2023.
