DBHS student’s new goals for the new year
As the calendar flips to a new year, people worldwide reflect on their lives and set goals for the coming year. From personal growth to professional aspirations, New Year’s resolutions are an eternal tradition, for hope and a fresh start.
New Year’s resolutions date back 4000 years to ancient Babylonian society. The resolutions tradition in that time frame is similar to those today. However, one major difference is religion’s role. In Babylonian society, people made promises to their pagan gods and sought their favor. Today, New Year resolutions are still religious to some, however, not as much as it was back then. For others, it’s simply reflecting on the past year and coming up with new ideas to improve oneself in the upcoming year.
DBHS sophomore Sarah Martinez shared, “I have decided to focus on my mental health this year. I am starting therapy and scheduling more time for self-care.”
Resolutions are about self-improvement and many focus on relationships or giving back to communities. One common theme this upcoming year with Deerfield Beach High School students, is prioritizing health—both physical and mental. Many students also plan to improve their school routines. Others want to strengthen personal relationships with close ones.
DBHS student James Garcia said, “2025 is the year I will be on time for school. I’m setting milestones to make it happen.”
“I want to spend more time with my family. Life feels too short to miss moments while I’m young.” Said DBHS student Jazzy Roberts.
Many research studies indicate that the majority of people ditch their New Year resolutions before the 1st of February. Reasons why people do not stick to their resolutions include forgetting and setting unrealistic goals, some become unmotivated and others simply lack discipline and accountability. Despite these challenges, few remain determined. And mindset plays an important role in their success.
As 2025 begins many have already planned their resolutions for the new year. Whether its big dreams or insignificant changes, the start of a new year is a chance for everyone to envision a brighter future. And one of the best mindsets to have is to value improvement over perfection.
