Acing the Competition

Girls’ volleyball heads into the playoffs on a strong note

Starting the season with an impressive 6-3 record, the Lady Bucks are eager to take on the playoffs. They have overcome many obstacles and feats, going head-to-head with competitive rivals. A particular game that stood out was their 3-1 win against Coral Springs High School.

“We were all a little scared in the beginning because we played them last year and lost. However, we fought hard and ended up winning,” senior setter and captain Melissa Labadessa said. “This served to show us that we are better than we think and that we must erase the past and only focus on what is happening at the moment.”

They credit part of their success to the team’s support for each other. It’s clear that the team has a real connection, and they love watching their teammates succeed.

“My favorite moment was our game against South Broward. We were in a rally and Ja’kayla Stanley, one of our middles, blocked the other team’s hit,” sophomore outside hitter Mari Nelson said.

Communication is key to everything in life, but it’s crucial when it comes to sports. Deerfield Beach High does their best to keep the team’s chemistry intact. This plays a big part in their success this season.

“My favorite aspect of our team is being able to stay engaged and energized in tough situations. We are great at communicating with one another,” sophomore middle blocker Tylei Spina said.

The girls proved their unwavering commitment by practicing every day, despite not being able to use the DBHS gym. They plan to keep practicing hard to prep for playoffs.

“The energy of the team this year is better than last year. So far, we are doing well despite a few losses, but I believe that our losses were due to small errors which could easily be improved,” senior right-side hitter Livia Caldeira said.

Three games remain on the regular season schedule, and the Bucks hope to finish the season at a 9-3 record. Deerfield hosts Blanche Ely on October 6th, then visits Northeast High on October 7, and finishes the season at Dillard High on October 11th.

The District Playoffs seeding will be determined on the week of October 10th. Deerfield Beach is part of Classification 6A District 13. Click here for more information on the playoffs.
