An Eternity of Waiting Has Passed

Marvel’s Eternals Movie Premiers

Back with a new action-packed adventure, Marvel Cinematic Universe will release the movie Eternals Friday, November 5, 2021. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the new storyline will be adding to the MCU phase four plan.

Based on the Marvel comics, one million years ago, when the Celestials visited Earth, they performed genetic experiments on early proto humanity. They created two divergent races: the long-lived Eternals and the genetically unstable, monstrously grotesque Deviants. The ten demigods who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years reunite to battle the evil Deviants.

The Phase four plan in Marvel takes place after the end of the world events from Avengers: Endgame. All phase four films and TV series thus far, aside from the Black Widow prequel, have taken place after a year from the events of Endgame.

Eternals is confirmed to take place in the present time, set over 7,000 years. Living as immortals means that the heroes have existed through many periods. Teaser trailers and posters have highly suggested biblical references that might determine their starts on Earth.

With many actors and actresses to have chosen for the characters, the main cast is widely diverse. Mexican-American actress Salma Hayek plays the leader of the Eternals, Ajak. Pakistani-American actor Kumail Nanjiani plays the fire bringer Kingo, and the Korean-American actor Don Lee is the superhuman Gilgamesh.

For the first time, Marvel will have a figure who is deaf on and off the screen. Lauren Ridloff will be the first deaf superhero in the MCU. She plays as the lightning-fast Eternal Makkari.

It is unclear how much of the original story from the comics is in the movie. Original comic lovers or just casual movie watchers alike are excited to watch.

“As a Marvel fan, I’m excited to see how they will introduce aliens into the superhero world,” senior David Conner said. “All the movies I’ve seen from Marvel have been the same, but that’s what makes the movies so good. I believe it will be a good watch.”

Even non-Marvel watchers have heard about the buzz and are intrigued to see what phase four has in store.

“I’m not a huge fan of Marvel, but I know they come out with good movies,” junior Carlos Escamilla Angeles said, “Of course it is Marvel so I know it will be a good action movie. However, it does not seem like a typical movie for Marvel to put out. If I ever watch, I would like to see Tom Holland [Spiderman] make a cameo.”

Marvel plans a year prior for the production of movies but, due to Covid-19, release dates have been affected. A blessing and a curse, as everything goes back to normal, Marvel continues to launch and release movies and shows, leaving fans eager for more.

“I remember hearing about this movie on Twitter and was so excited to watch,” sophomore Arbuns Geffrard said. “I don’t know what to expect but it would be my dream to see Black panther make some screentime.”

As phase four continues, many praises and high ratings from the already released movies and TV shows continue to increase. The exceptions and anticipations of the movie are high, including the difference this film compared to the other MCU films. Eternals will only be in theaters for 45 days, so Marvel fans will not get as much time to view on the big screen.
