Consumer chaos usher in black Friday
After Thanksgiving, many retailers and big companies began the holiday shopping season. Before Thanksgiving was celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, it was celebrated on the fifth. President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday back a week so the holiday shopping season could start earlier. This day would later be popularized as black Friday.
For decades, Black Friday has become the biggest shopping day of the year, with companies offering customers numerous deals to save money. A day when most of the country is preparing to save everything from electronic items to fashionable clothes. Major retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy offer doorbuster discounts, on televisions, laptops, smartphones, and home appliances. For fashion lovers, prices on clothing, shoes, and accessories are found in big brands such as Macy, Old Navy, and Nike.
DBHS sophomore said her favorite way to spend black Friday is “shopping”.
Other local shops have joined the rush, offering competitive discounts to woo shoppers. Many small businesses are joining in using Black Friday to display unique products while providing special promotions. Supporting local stores helps the community and ensures distinctive finds. For those who would rather not brave the crowds, online shopping is a convenient option to score the hottest deals. Many retailers are extending the Black Friday sales online, with some starting at the beginning of the week.
“I do plan on shopping”. DBHS sophomore Abigail Payne said, “I’m looking forward to the half-off and small sales from other businesses”.
Whether in-store or online shopping, Black Friday is just the opportunity to get more at a lower price. Shoppers need to budget their finances and avoid making impulsive decisions. Research the products to be purchased and compare the prices to ensure the best value. With planning, one can make the most of this season’s best deals while avoiding overspending.
