Let the games begin
Deerfield Beach High School offers various extracurricular activities during the fall such as sports. Some of these sports are infamous at Deerfield for their long history and achievements so, their popularity is growing and sweeping the community, as with varsity football, girls’ volleyball, golf, and the swimming and diving teams. Here are the four fall sports statistics and records gathered in one place. The Varsity football team, managed by Coach Cam, has their next game away at Cardinal Gibbons on October 10th at 7:00 pm. The team’s record is 1-3, and hopefully, they win at Cardinal Gibbons to break the current losing streak.
Another beloved sport for the school is girls’ volleyball, managed by Coach Debrocq. Their next matchup is on October 10th at 4:30 pm at Coral Springs. They currently stand on an high winning streak; they are on an outstanding record! Next up is the boys’ golf team. Coach Johnston manages the team. Coach Williams manages the girls’ golf team. Students interested in boys’/girls’ golf should stop by room 324 after school to speak to Coach Johnston before official golf matches start.
‘I like the competitiveness of each sport, and everyone always has a lot of fun before and after the games, like at the Deerfield vs. Blanche Ely game’ says Mia Campbell, a sophomore student and athlete at DBHS.
One of the Olympic sports is at Deerfield, and it’s swimming and diving! The team is managed by the coach Officer. Their next swim meet is on October 16th, at Monarch High School at 4:30 pm. Another old-fashioned sport is cross-country. The team is held and managed by Coach Bolah. Their first track meet is at Quiet Waters Park on October 10th at 4:30 pm. If any student finds these extracurricular activities intriguing, speak with a guidance counselor to check if the sport is still available.
Remember, these sports require athletic skills and capabilities and will take time from doing schoolwork/homework and other things people may do in their own time. On the bright side, colleges will offer scholarships if students are willing to put effort into school and whichever sport(s) they choose. Regardless of if a student is not naturally good at sports, participating in these activities will look great on resumes and college applications. Doing sports for two years will count toward the physical education credits and will get a few steps closer to meeting those graduation requirements.
