American Healthcare System
Humans continuously evolve, both physically and socially, constantly adapting to overcome challenges. One significant area where adaptation has driven progress is in the development of medicinal treatments, which have helped humanity live longer and healthier lives.
“Obviously, industries need to make money, but sometimes prices are just ridiculous, especially if you don’t have access to insurance,” said Deerfield Beach High School junior Jorge Mederos. “Not everyone can afford $600 insulin, and insurance is a pain to get approval from. It just feels like the system isn’t built for people who really need help.”
As of 2025, many medical products have found a 4.5% median increase. Even as some sit at a simple $30-50, that money isn’t accessible to everyone, especially those who can’t afford insurance. The average cost of health insurance sits at around $9,000 annually; a cost many Americans find themselves unable to pay for. The health care of America has long been a debate due to the constantly rising prices.
“America is the land of the free, but not free health care,” said DBHS junior Sarah Parrish. “It’s controversial to say, but the health care system in America is painful to think about. People go out of their way to neglect their health just to avoid being slapped with a huge medical bill that’ll put you in generational debt. If it isn’t college debt, it’s definitely medical debt.”
As the years pass, inflation worsens, which causes significant increases in prices of goods from groceries to healthcare. In 1980, health care costed around $78 monthly; now in 2025, it costs $450-621 a month. There really is no escaping a big bill at a hospital, even with insurance.
“My biggest fear is going to the hospital, looking for help, then having to pay a huge bill that costs more than my college tuition, which says a lot about both our healthcare and education system,” said DBHS senior Karma Saleem.
Thousands of Americans die yearly due to neglect of their health. Whether it is because they can’t afford to pay medical costs and avoid hospitals entirely, or due to being turned down by their insurance companies. America is sought after by millions due to the promise of the American dream, but it is hard to live out that dream when there is the nagging fear of getting hurt and ending up at a hospital. America is there in sickness and in health, but with a huge bill wrapped in a pretty ribbon.
