Acting respectful online

There are many different ways that people act on social media. The internet allows different people from various backgrounds to connect easily. It brings all sorts of people together with many platforms. Most people will treat others kindly, but other people are rude, which can be because of distance or anonymity. Being extremely rude online is widespread, usually because people believe there are no serious consequences.

“It is this weird thing where people feel they need to hate on people through their screen just to do it. It can be funny sometimes, but sometimes people take it too far and are downright evil,” said Deerfield Beach High School junior Amanda Namor.

Being respectful doesn’t just apply in real life; it also applies on the internet. It is important to take other people’s feelings into consideration before sending out a message or post. An influential person online can amplify a single video and sometimes have extremely hostile views. Yet, it is also easy for someone like that to post positive things like quotes. Maintaining basic decency on the internet is not hard in any way, just like it is easy to be nice in the real world.

“People have always been mean on the internet, you shouldn’t take everything people say to heart, but it is also important to educate yourself on the fact that the internet has gotten more rude,” said DBHS junior I’yoki Carney. “You need to think before you act; which is something they taught in elementary school. A lot of bullies, pressure and just downright negativity.”

Section 230; A U.S. law passed in 1996 that states web operators are not liable for what users post on their sites. When a person posts something offensive, they will be held accountable. Some people are not fully aware of this law; and this can impact them, especially when they assume that nothing will happen and continue acting the way they act. It is crucial to be kind and consider the feelings of others when browsing the internet. Having basic decency on the internet is one of the many things that can lead to a nice experience online. One nice comment can form some close and unprecedented bonds.
