Crimes committed by Juvenile offenders.
Crime happens everywhere. Statistically, a crime occurs nearly every minute; thousands of which are committed by juvenile offenders. By their age, although not fully developed, they know right from wrong. It all depends on whether something was done for survival or just to be done.
“There is a certain limit to how far punishment should go, especially for younger people, more so minors,” said Deerfield Beach High School senior Thiago Codeceria. “But also, you know better. Sometimes it’s for survival, but other times it’s done just to be done.”
Rehabilitation programs focus on education, counseling, and skill development that can help these young offenders become productive members of society. Sentencing them to life in prison without parole could ignore their potential for growth and improvement. However, a person’s age should not be an excuse.
“If you commit certain crimes, you should expect to be charged. Especially for serious crimes, you should know that if you are caught, you’ll get charged as an adult,” said DBHS senior Jordin Juste.
Many people believe that sentencing young offenders to life in prison without parole goes against human rights. Generally, people think that instead of focusing on harsh punishments, the justice system should aim to heal both the victims and the offenders through reconciliation and community support. Many young offenders who receive life sentences without parole come from marginalized communities, which keeps them trapped in cycles of disadvantage and inequality.
There is a difference between infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies. Most crimes committed by juveniles are larceny theft or vandalism, as well as drug and alcohol use, disorderly conduct, and simple assault. Prioritizing rehabilitation over life sentences without parole recognizes that young people can change and helps to create a fairer and more humane society. However, bigger crimes like murder can’t be pushed under the bus, and rightful punishment should be expected.
