Encouraging a Love for Reading

The Impact of School Libraries

School libraries and their staff are often a resource overlooked and underappreciated. In an effort to recognize libraries and the effect they have on a student’s education the School Board of Broward County, Florida declared April as School Library Month.

The purpose of School Library Month (SLM) is to commemorate school libraries and the critical role they play in creating and supporting quality learning environments and school media specialists directly supporting and enhancing student achievement.

Broward County works hard to provide a multitude of ways to connect the students to the information they will need for school. Every school library program provides access to a broad variety of educational materials such as books, magazines, audio and video materials, digital resources, academic databases, and free-to-use computers with just the use of an ID number.

Within school libraries, librarians work diligently to close gaps in achievement for all students using library programs and access to academic resources. Not only do librarians and media specialists provide learning activities designed to enhance reading motivation and establish literacy skills necessary for lifelong learning, but they also overlook decorations, lounge areas, shipment of books, regulation rules for a better library experience to promote a love of reading.

In support of School Library Month, all students are encouraged to become aware of the contributions made by library media programs in schools.
