How Trio Upward Bound Prepares Students for College
High school is a time of exploration, development, learning, and college preparation. But taking the correct steps might be stressful, which is where Trio Upward Bound comes in.
Trio Upward Bound is a federally funded program governed by the United States Department of Education that supports students in college readiness. They seek out kids who need help the most; Students in low-income families, are at risk of academic failure or will be first generation college applicants. This program provides Deerfield Beach High School with incredible opportunities, as they are a part of the exclusive four schools to access its privileges.
In addition to providing the necessary resources for students, they also get paid to learn. Students receive a quarterly stipend based on their grades and how much they participate. The activities vary throughout college tours, scholarship applications, goal setting, and educational workshops free of charge. The program strives to grant students every privilege necessary for their post-secondary education success.
Trio Upward Bound is committed to its creed and follows its words through caring advisors. They meet with every student one-on-one to talk about goals, how to set them, and how to meet them. And any academic or personal student need is met with aid by the staff, as they hold high regard for their members. Putting in the work necessary to help scholars achieve their educational goals is a promise they try everything to accomplish.
“I absolutely love what I do and seeing the students grow into more mature and successful individuals,” coordinator Kathia Dumelle said.
When preparing for college, the SATs and ACTs are vital factors in being accepted by schools. Trio Upward Bound offers preparation activities for both tests to all the students. Without scattering notes to study, the program ensures paced and helpful resources to focus on successfully taking the tests.
As coordinator Megan Scutti said, “The program helps prepare students for the SATs and ACTs by providing workshop opportunities that help with preparing and strategizing for the test.”
Additionally, prep books are offered to study, and waivers are handed out to the students to allow them to take tests without cost. There is also a 6-week summer program that includes intensive SAT and ACT prep to help retain learning and test-taking skills. Participants are also provided study guide websites, and tutors if need be. The program is a privilege that allows some the opportunity to maneuver their way through the arduous course of studying for these pertinent tests.
To aid students and give back to the community, the U.S. Department of Education presents Deerfield Beach High School students with the chance to grow as scholars. Rather than planning a stressful strategy for college, the program helps with preparation and more for its members. Given its incredible resources, learning experiences, and staff, Trio Upward Bound is a considerable program worth every word.
