  •  Ordinary To Extraordinary
Transformers rise up A science fiction action movie called “Transformers One” a reboot of the transformer franchise is the first animated Transformers film in over 40 years. Based on Hasbro’s Transformers toy line and released in theaters, September 20, 2024. Directed by Josh Cooley, the movie features several voice actors, with the main ones being Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Scarlett Johansson as Elita Vanessa, and Liguori as Airachnid. This movie tells the origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron. The plot follows Orion Pax and D16/Megatron as friends and their work lives. As the story progresses, we are introduced to more characters like Bumble Bee and Elita One, as well as their jobs. The movie is set in CyberTron, the home of the Transformers. The sentient robots are powered by a substance called Energon and have transformation cogs that allow them to change into vehicles. However, some of them don’t have transformation cogs. This leads the main characters to fight for their freedom and their world, but one of them takes it too far. “Watching Transformers has always been fun for me, so this was a great opportunity to be able to watch an animated version,” said DBHS freshman Kiara-Ordonez Diaz. Transformers one is a perfect movie for a young audience, as well as an older audience. The Transformers movies have always been iconic in their history dating back to the 1980’s when the Transformers toy line was welcomed.  This film was supposed to be released on July 19, 2024, however it was initially delayed to September 13, before shifting a week later to avoid competition with Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. The producers also said they would make a sequel if the movie did well. Transformers One had criticism, but it also had some praise. For example, some said that the computer-generated style of Transformers One was a problem, as it made the film feel both expensive and cheap. Others say the film’s animation made the characters look less authentic than their comic counterparts. Others say that making the characters resemble their comic counterparts made the story more authentic and enjoyable. But fans are saying that the biggest issue was the movie’s tone and that it was overly comedic and unnecessarily lighthearted. It has been confirmed that Transformers One will receive a sequel film as long as everything goes well with the first installment. Cooley has admitted, “I remember seeing the ‘86 movie at a friend’s birthday party, and I was a part of that generation that was affected by it. I’m too close to Transformers One.” Showing Cooley’s admiration and pride for the Transformers. • Once Upon A Witch
Agatha Harkness is back The Marvel Universe has expanded once more, with its new horror Disney Plus TV series, “Agatha All Along” featuring Agatha Harkness. Released on September 18, 2024, directed by Jac Schaeffer, Rachel Goldberg, and Ganda Monteiro. This show is a new addition to Marvel’s horror category. Agatha Harkness is played by Kathryn Hahn, an iconic actress also known for her role as Michelle in “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”.  Agatha Harkness made her first appearance on WandaVision. Another Disney Plus Marvel TV series from 2021. Which is helpful to the plot of Agatha All Along.  Many are excited to see her face again on her show and see what she has to offer in the world of witchcraft and chaos.  Agatha Harkness is one of the most powerful witches in the Marvel Universe. Created by the iconic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, according to her character description, she is many centuries old due to her slow aging. The way she is portrayed on the show is different from her original comic book character, but she keeps her mysterious look.  Agatha All Along is much like a sequel to WandaVision but focuses only on Agatha. It begins with Agatha breaking out of a spell cast by Wanda back from the events of WandaVision and Agatha gains her identity back after being held down under that spell. But she becomes curious as a teenage boy is the one to break her out of the spell. The teen’s motive is to get Agatha’s help to walk through the witch’s road. A mystical and mysterious dimension that only certain magic users and those summoned by them can enter.  It is said that whoever walks through the witch’s road and survives, will get what they want most. Agatha reluctantly agrees only because with her powers gone, she is willing to walk the road to gain them again. The only catch is that she needs a coven to walk the road. It may not be easy, but Agatha forms her coven with each witch wanting something from the road, they must put aside their differences and work together to get what they want. In a situation of life or death, the witches go through different trials on the road that test their knowledge of witchcraft. The show’s new episodes come out on Disney Plus every Wednesday, making it a long-lasting show with everyone wanting to see what happens next. Emotion, horror, and action fill TV screens as Agatha and her coven walk the road, they might backstab each other, fail a trial, or even kill each other but it is only a matter of who will reach the end. As the show moves, it opens about Agatha’s backstory regarding her son Nicholas Scratch. Agatha All Along is part of the horror category, so production was big on getting visual effects right for the show. Figuring out the title was challenging enough for the crew. But despite the challenges they might’ve had, Kathryn Hahn was optimistic at the entertainment of Agatha’s story. Saying, “We can say that it is hilarious and deep. And I was moved to work with all these people every day. It was a gratuitous dream that it happened to be this group to go through that together.” Written by Janna Margar Pit | Graphic Designed by Janna Margar Pit Published October 23, 2024 | ePathfinder | Entertainment

  • The Summer I Turned Pretty
Love-triangle of the decade The teen love show, The Summer I Turned Pretty sparked every fan’s heart with a second season. The first season was released only a year ago which makes it even better. Originally being a trilogy book series by author Jenny Han, it is now a TV series giving its fans a fresh look at each character. Actress Lola Tung starred as the main character Isabelle “Belly” Conklin, a sweet teenage girl caught in between a dilemma with Jeremiah Fisher, played by Gavin Casalegno and Conrad Fisher, played by Christopher Briney. These characters make up the love triangle that builds throughout the show, and a group that constantly makes fans shuffle between all three sides. Considered a coming-of-age story, The Summer I Turned Pretty focuses on Belly, who holds a romantic connection between two teenage boys who happen to be brothers. It begins with a longing crush on her childhood best friend Conrad. All she’s known is her fixation on him but during her summer break in Cousins Beach, a series of events makes her question whether she likes Conrad, or his brother, Jeremiah. Without a doubt, this is more complicated than any other love triangle. It plays with the dynamics of love, friendship, family, and morals. The first season was released on June 17, 2022, and the second season was released on July 14, 2023. The book author, Jenny Han also contributed to producing and making an appearance in the show. This helped the director and other producers get a better understanding of what was supposed to happen because they had her insight. Since the newest season came out, many new fans have shown support with its concept. The series does an excellent job portraying the emotions of a teen girl stepping out of her comfort zone and into the experiences of being 16. It gives many other teenage viewers someone to relate with. “It made me so sad, but it was entertaining and that’s why I liked it. When it comes to Belly, I kind of relate to her because it was a little hard for me growing up, from being a kid to as I am now,” said Deerfield Beach High School sophomore Anisah Mohammad. The Summer I Turned Pretty does not just give an entertaining plot and an exciting love triangle but also shows a realistic situation of a summer vacation with family friends. Lately, it was announced on August 3, 2023, that a third season will officially be coming out eventually. Although the exact date is not clear, many fans and DBHS students alike are excited to see where the story is going to take this love triangle. The MTV Video Music Awards People were celebrating this year’s VMAs on September 12th, 2023. Many celebrities and artists surprised the masses with their talent and got the recognition they deserved. In 1984, MTV began the VMAs (Video Music Awards) to award and recognize talented individuals and move their rank up in the singing industry. Since then, the VMAs have entertained their audience and have given the winners something to motivate them to keep doing what they are doing. Looking back at older VMA celebrations, things have changed since the first VMAs were held. Iconic artists of each generation perform at the VMAs to give their guests something to look forward to besides the award-giving ceremony. In one of the earlier celebrations, bands like the Smashing Pumpkins, The Rolling Stones, and artists like Snoop Dogg performed and were unforgettable. In this year’s VMAs on September 12th, 2023, artists Olivia Rodrigo, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Karol G, and Demi Lovato performed on the stage with many songs and incredible talent. Even the K-pop or Korean Pop groups Stray Kids and TOMORROW X TOGETHER performed. These talented individuals should be proud of the recognition they are granted for being invited to the award show. Few people know the importance of giving awards to those who work hard. VMAs are influential to lots of celebrities and always aim to appreciate artists who deserve it. It is wonderful how the VMA Awards bring celebrities and artists together to celebrate each other’s talent. “It’s good to recognize artists because it appreciates their work and brings them out there more. The fact that it’s so many artists in one place and getting awards for everything makes it special,” said Deerfield Beach High School freshman Brianna Rivera. Although not all that participate in the VMA awards receive an award, the awards are given to the ones that deserve it the most and worked the hardest for it. It is a fan-voted award, so it all depends on an artist’s fan base to push them to the top. In this year’s VMAs, some of the most viral winners were Taylor Swift for all three video, artist, and song of the year. Ice Spice won Best New Artist, Maneskin won Best Rock, and many more artists won awards for their talented work. Not only do the VMAs recognize singers and artists, but also influence their music to give people what they want. The award show has done an incredible job of helping artists continue their careers. Annually, numerous people look forward to watching the VMAs celebrate big and small artists. The boys’ basketball team also has a game on November 13th against Somerset Keys Lions marking the first of a long list of competitions. The players are pumped as they enter this next period, and a lot has changed since the last. Different expectations are rising for this year; the boys’ and girls’ basketball players are preparing to reach them with a slam dunk. “My expectations are for it to be challenging and I hope to come out a district champion,” said DBHS senior Shanice Rebecca. “I’m excited for the journey and to see how I develop on and off the court.” The Deerfield Beach High basketball initiative provides many opportunities for talented players to achieve their goals. Basketball is also a great sport to help strengthen the minds of students when it comes to partnership and competition. Players build up this innate skill with techniques like defense and rebounding drills with their teammates by their side. As soon as the games start, players have to be ready mentally and physically. The school is confident that the teams will have more wins than losses and is looking forward to the games that have yet to come. • The First Step
The first quarter has come to a close With the first quarter of the 2024-2025 school year ending, it is time for both students and teachers alike to reflect. It is important to realize that each quarter is very important, even in the beginning. Looking back on your grades and other things from the first quarter is good to help you recognize what you need to work on in the upcoming quarters. The first quarter grades also contribute to things upcoming towards the end of the semester, like midterm exams. Midterm exams are very important tests that teachers give right before winter break. This year they’ll be on December 17th through December 20th. This ties in with the first quarter of the school year because if students want to be exempt from these exams, most teachers require a B or higher for the first and second quarter in their class. All of this is also important for students in the Communication Broadcasting Arts (CBA) magnet program, as first and second quarter grades as well as midterm exam results can all contribute to a student’s requirements to be in CBA. “I did horrible in the first quarter, but I’m currently improving by getting my work done by the due dates” says Deerfield Beach High School junior, Debora Callejas. It is also important to keep in mind that first quarter grades do still count for students’ grade point average (GPA). GPAs are updated after every semester, so it adds up first and second semester grades and goes from there. These grades are also the biggest contributing factors to class rank. The class rank is a numerical value that shows how a student’s academic performance compares to their classmates. This number also considers the difficulty of a student’s classes. To elaborate, if someone is taking honors or AP courses, they may be ranked higher than someone who is not taking those types of classes. All in all, the first quarter is just as important as all the quarters that come after it. Now that it has concluded, students can look back on their grades and see if they need improvement in certain areas. There are always opportunities to help a student improve, like tutoring. With the very short second quarter, it is imperative that everyone is on top of their work as there are many breaks and days off during this quarter. McJrotc annual cake cutting ceremony   On November 10, Marines in various areas of the world will perform the cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the crop’s birthday. This is a long-standing tradition that honors Marines from the past, the present, and the future. The ceremony demonstrates the passing of knowledge from one generation to another. Deerfield Beach High School Marine crop Junior rotc celebrates this tradition yearly to pay respect and inspire their cadets to learn. While the Marine Corps was established on November 10, 1775, the first evidential cake-cutting ceremony was in 1935, in Quantico Virginia. The ceremony contains various uses of symbolism. For instance, key personnel carry the Mameluke sword throughout the ceremony, representing the Marines’s warrior spirit and the commitment to protect the nation and live in peace. The first piece of cake is cut with the same sword and presented to the guest of honor. The second piece of cake is given to the oldest Marine in command, signifying the honor and respect accorded to experience and seniority. The third piece is given to the oldest cadet present and passed on to the youngest cadet. It symbolizes the passing of experience and tradition from the older to the newer generation. The ceremony was In a military manner. The ceremony taught the cadets to work under pressure and to work efficiently. And many songs were played for each accordance. The Officer of the Day song plays when the officers in the ceremony march in front of the guides, symbolizing the leadership role of officers who guide their unit. When the color guard is in center court, “The Star-Spangled Banner” is played to show respect for the country and the flag. After the ceremony, “Anchors Aweigh” and “The Marines’ Hymn” are played. DBHS Shopmore Milena Medeiros said, “I learned how to work better under pressure and in serious situations and I believe others learned that too”. DBHS McJrotc cadets practice these various roles after school and during class. During their practice sessions, the cadets had the opportunity to build strong bonds and deepen their understanding of Marine Corps history. On November 8, 2024, they performed for their parents, guardians, teachers, and other guests. “It was truly an unforgettable day”. Said DBHS Junior Heidy García, “Seeing all the cadets practice hard for that day made me proud”. Nepotism and the works Many sayings speak about connections and money. A person can get far if they have money and the resources. When someone has both combined, they can get away with more than an average person could. “You think you do not see Nepotism going on much, but it is pretty much everywhere,” said Deerfield Beach High School sophomore Sarah Parrish. “It is not an issue until it becomes one. If your boss came into work one day and told you their child will be working under the same company, you would probably walk on eggshells around them so you do not get a bad impression and get fired.” Nepotism stems from late in history. The word comes from the Italian word nepotismo. Late in the 17th century, people, more commonly those of the higher Catholic church, would appoint their nephews to high positions, regardless of other, likely more qualifying candidates. This likely is not the first origin of Nepo babies. Knowing people with power and wealth brings many advantages and even unfairness to other people. When technology was developed and shows, movies, and plays began to rise in popularity, so did celebrities and Nepo babies. “Pretty much everyone wants to be born a Nepo baby. Rich, famous, and barely any worries. The only issue is how much of an effect that would have on society. Rich people love flaunting their money and people will bend over backwards just to even be recognized by those people. So, if a rich person comes asking for a favor, or more specifically, something for their child or relative, you would be more likely to give it to them in the hopes you get rewarded big time,” said DBHS senior Laura Dumas. Nepo babies gain fame, success, opportunities, or even money just by being born into a specific family. Nepo babies consist of children of actors, models, artists, producers, etc. By being born into a famous name, the child gains that popularity. Most of the time, that child has a straightforward and high chance of becoming famous, wealthy, and popular all over again. It becomes an issue when these people block the road for other people to reach their accomplishments by taking job offers that they might not even be qualified for, keeping people from getting out there, and sometimes getting a job. “There has always been a difference between the rich and the poor; they will always have a higher chance at anything than the poor. When you are poor or middle class, you work extremely hard to get even an inch of where rich people are. Offspring of rich people do not need to do that since they are born with a silver spoon and barely gotta work,” said DBHS junior Auriel Neal. “It is not fair in the slightest, some people work hard for everything, and then others get everything handed to them with no problem.” Hard work pays off, people are taught that at a young age. It gets hard for some people to watch others do not even half the work they did, and get more than double the reward. It can create a negative feeling in society and make people lose hope as it makes them feel like they Written by Jennifer Landaverde | Graphic Designed by Jennifer Landaverde Published November 7, 2024 | ePathfinder | Perspectives

DBHS Band awarded all superiors   For the first time in twenty years, the Marching Bucks were awarded a superior rating in every category at the Music Performance Assessment (MPA). The last time the band received a straight superior rating was in 1999 under the title The Spirit of the Bucks. MPA is one of the top prioritized events in band season. Marching bands from high schools all over Broward County meet to perform in front of experts, receive critical feedback, and categorize. “It felt amazing after getting all superior”. Said DBHS Senior Band president and French horn/ Mello leader Mario Thomas. “Everyone in the band considers MPA as the most important performance of the year, and to make history at DBHS great!” The DBHS band has prepared for this event since the beginning of the school year. Each section practiced numerous times among themselves to perfect their parts. The band practices Monday-Friday from 3-6 and sometimes later doing crunch time. Section leaders describe the most effective parts of their training process as repetition, teamwork, and commitment. They worked on fundamentals, tuning their instruments, did warm-ups, and spent time on the field perfecting formation.  “I would say just the practices and sectionals we did. When it comes to perfecting the music, all it takes is time and commitment”. Said DBHS Junior, Clarinet section leader and band vice president Justin Cruz. “We never settle for anything less than perfect”. “It took a lot of hard work, discipline, and teamwork. We would not have been able to do it without each other”. Said DBHS Senior Drum major Isaiah Gowdy. “Having self-control and a strong work ethic”. Understanding that growth and mindset play a major role in how people perform is key. DBHS band Leaders and Members describe the change they saw in themselves and their peers in the days leading up to the ceremony. They visualized the passion, dedication, and level of seriousness. These changes in characteristics were to prepare and to change the mistakes or develop their skills further than where they were in the last MPA session. ”That everyone became more in tune and serious”. Said DBHS Junior Ivan Stcyr, the band Trumpet section leader and vice president. The band’s current goals are preparing for competition season, upcoming parades, battles of the band, and solo and ensemble. And to place superior for the concert band season MPA. Students interested can join the band and have the opportunity to develop their fundamental skills. It does require students to work hard stay committed and participate. Band leaders advise students joining the band to go for it and give it their all. ”Our next goal is completing the football season and hopefully getting a superior at Concert MPA”. Said DBHS Senior Band president and French horn/ Mello leader Mario Thomas.   DBHS Junior Ivan Stcyr, the band Trumpet section leader and vice president said, “that good is the enemy of great.” Written by Widelandine Emilcar  | Graphic Designed by Widelandine Emilcar  Published November 4, 2024 | ePathfinder | Feature
