Deerfield Beach High School has approximately over 350 ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students who come from all over the world, but mostly from the Caribbean Islands and Central and South America. Students whose home language is not English are evaluated upon entering Deerfield Beach High School and are placed either in sheltered ESOL classes or regular classes depending on English language level.
The ESOL Department is committed to providing rigorous academics, promoting community involvement, and delivering quality services to English Language Learners, and multilingual families.
Instructional Support
As per Section IV of the META Consent Decree, ELLs in ESOL basic subject area classrooms shall have access to an aide or teacher, proficient in their languages, in addition to a trained ESOL subject area teacher.
Student will get assistance with the following:
• Translating information
• Interpreting test questions and homework assignments as appropriate
• Helping students comprehend textbooks and other written materials.
• Home language assistance through other bilingual school personnel, including registrars, clerks, guidance counselors, ESOL Program staff, and other school support staff.
In addition, schools must provide bilingual dictionaries (hardcopy or electronic) and may provide resource materials in students’ home languages such as computer software, videos, content glossaries and other resources books to facilitate content area knowledge development while English is being learned. These resources may be placed in the school’s virtual media center.
