What to know about the upcoming midterms

Midterms are right around the corner as the Christmas season is beginning. Deerfield Beach Bucks are studying for the upcoming tests. Every class that provides a graduation credit has a midterm test. The exams are taken at the end of the first semester before winter break. This year, the exam week is from December 20th to December 23rd.

Midterm exams days will be full four period school days from 7:40 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. and follow a specific schedule.

Exemption forms were given out on December 5th and are due this Friday, December 9th. There are no exceptions to the due date. Students can exempt up to three midterms if they finished the first quarter with a B and have a B or higher at the time of the exam. If the current grade drops to lower than a B, a student is obligated to take the midterm exam even if it is signed. However, there are some exceptions, students taking advanced placement (AP) courses and International Baccalaureate (IB) cannot exempt their midterms no matter final grades.

Midterms are a crucial factor in school. In order to pass one semester of a course, a student must pass either both quarters with grades higher than an F or one quarter with a grade higher than an F and the midterm. The same rules apply for the final exams at the end of the year.

Students earn half a credit at the end of each semester depending on if they pass their class or not, meaning a midterm is a deciding factor in getting their credits. Midterms serve as a checking point for students to make sure they are on the right track in their individual classes and overall path to graduation.
