How NOW Works to Achieve Full Equality for Women
Throughout history, women have contributed countlessly to society. Carrying on with Women’s History Month, the world continues to honor their accomplishments. However, they still face prejudice, misogyny, bigotry and more. To combat this, the National Organization for Women (N.O.W.) works to create a world they can feel equal and safe in.
NOW was established in the 1960s to support legal and economic equality for women. Today, NOW’s scope of issues to tackle have significantly increased. Economic justice, pay equity, racial discrimination, reproductive rights, global feminist issues, ending violence against women, fighting bigotry against the LGBTQ+ community, and more are all topics being addressed by NOW.
NOW is the nation’s leading feminist group with 500,000 members to support them. They work through a multitude of public education and litigation projects. One of their most noted projects is their Love Your Body (LYB) Campaign.
The LYB Campaign is targeted at young women. It educates the youth about matters concerning body image and healthy living. Some activities they engage in involve discussing
commercial objectification of women’s bodies and promoting unhealthy products and practices. By reaching youths, NOW is able to teach them to love, take care of, and accept themselves early on.
Aside from education, NOW does more than spread the word of equality. As the saying goes, “actions speak louder than words”. That is just what the National Organization for Women does to accomplish its goals. The organization has a history of working towards full equality for women through litigation.
NOW’s actions have actively challenged sex discrimination in society through several movements. One is advocating to make the Equal Rights Amendment valid in the constitution. This amendment will ensure that all women have the same legal rights as men. This is a necessary measure to protect women’s rights nationally.
Throughout the years, the organization has supported women in various ways. They have helped put more women in political posts, increased education surrounding gender equality, and grown employment and business opportunities for women. Furthermore, laws against violence, harassment, and discrimination against women have been made stricter due to their accomplishments.
The process of creating a society free of misogyny and inequality toward women is a long, collective effort. The National Organization for Women is making strides to realize that future. With their help and more, the possibility of complete equality for all might be more than just a dream.
