Flipping the Script on the MCU

What If?… Reveals different Storylines

In Marvels’ latest pack of shows released recently on Disney+, What If…? has been one of the most anticipated by the public. Based on the old comic series, this show takes a certain point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and changes it, creating a new universe with new stories to explore.

Marvel has previously released WandaVision, Loki, and the not so well-received The Falcon and the Winter Soldier show. Directed by Bryan Andrews, What if…? is one of the newest installments in the lead of all shows after Avengers: Endgame. Each episode has a different storyline and outcome, featuring heroes in other worlds.

The series follows after the season one finale of Loki, with the narrator being Uatu the Watcher. The Watcher is a god-like being watching over the infinite number of universes and the universe everyone knows about. He addresses the audience at the opening of every episode and describes how one decision can impact the world.

From swapping gender roles to siblings never even becoming siblings, every episode is something completely new. It can be surprising for MCU devotees to watch the life-saving heroes from the Marvel films be different. The heroes in our universe did not turn to power-craving maniacs, but the possibility of that happening in an alternate universe is plausible.

Many of the voice actors are the returning MCU cast playing their respective roles. Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and, including the late voice actor of Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman.

The show itself does a great job with the variety in each episode. The art style is engaging and strangely satisfying to watch. The stories are well told and hold many emotions and mysteries when it comes to unexpected twists. The endings leave the audience wanting more, even if they are meant to be short thirty to forty-minute stories.

What if…? is still ongoing, with a new episode released every Wednesday. The show is rated TV-14. Although the animation is softer with the action scenes, there may be frightening scenes for children.

Overall, it is an outstanding show with potential for the future of the heroes and their fans. The things that originate from the minds of Marvel are amazing, and this lives up to that unbroken record. It’s definitely worth the watch and possibly the new Disney+ subscription.
