Borderlands in the real world
In the world of gaming and digital chaos, a video game Borderlands, has awakened into a live-action film of the same name. Borderlands is directed by Eli Roth, and it is based on the popular video game franchise. With crazy details and a saturated color palette, an exaggerated sense of comedic relief translating to the cinema. The casting consists of Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, and Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina. Each actor achieves an anticipated gaming character tendency within the film character and a twist performance-wise.
Borderlands is set on the distant planet of Pandora and revolves around the adventures of several unlikely heroes searching for treasure that has not been seen in centuries. Leading the playable is Lilith, a magical siren with obvious larcenous qualities and an unclear backstory. Joining her on the mission is Roland, the soldier with a more callous attitude, Claptrap, the crack-a-lot robot, and Tiny Tina, a young girl who is excessively hyper and an explosives expert.
The plot of the film is different than the video game story. Which gave many original fans mixed feelings about the movie. But producers made it work by focusing on the new story and having a piece of the original story in the film. Eli Roth’s creativity balanced off the plot change and gave new fans an open look without confusion.
“Borderlands was a funny movie I enjoyed but there were some parts that I didn’t like,” said DBHS sophomore Clarence Momplaisir.
Borderlands was helmed by Eli Roth, known for horror efforts like Cabin Fever and Hostel, so a level of humor is blended with the action amidst a breakneck speed that highlights Roth’s keen eye for detail. Borderlands feels like it was created for fans of the video game series, yet at the same time, it attempts to appeal to a more global audience. Friendship, loyalty, and questing ethics run the show. If this motley crew can make interpersonal relationships come together, they will have to fight through the challenges of Pandora. Borderlands will be a belly-laughing to complement one of the best video game franchises ever.
Borderlands might have its backlash from a small group of people, but Eli Roth’s intention was to create a fun movie to entertain those who love the chaos and action of movies like Borderlands. He once said, “This is your world, this is your baby, but I want to do adaptation. I want to make a great movie. A big fun movie.”
