Harriers With Barriers

Can the runners beat the heat?

The Deerfield Beach High School runners crossed the finish line last week, ending the season on a high note. Before the start of the season, the runners had an issue with the weather as there were many heat advisories, which meant less time out in the sun. With the lack of training, the harriers had problems meeting their ideal time. As cross country is an individual sport, they constantly strive to beat their records.

“I knew I wanted to do a sport, and I went looking and I felt that this one had the best coach, and Coach Bolah seems nice, understanding, and kind,” said senior Dawud Kahn

This shows that cross-country is not only beneficial to your physical health but can also provide a community of people who will be there for you and help build confidence in yourself and your sport.

“This year summer was extraordinarily hot, and we have heat rules that guide how we can practice, so we ran into a lot of trouble at the beginning of the season about practicing outdoors,” said Coach Bolah.

Even though Mother Nature was not on their side, the runners persevered and gave their best effort. With many members of the team being inexperienced and just wanting to try a new sport it shows that it is never too late.

“We have a very new team this year and everyone except my two seniors are inexperienced with long distance,” said Coach Bolah. This proves that even if you are inexperienced and want to try a new sport, it is never too late. With the right support system and skills, you can achieve anything.

Even though they have crossed the finish line, The Bucks always strive to improve. With more conditioning and training, these bucks will be running laps with ease in no time.
