How to get community service hours

There are many ways to get community service hours at Deerfield Beach High School. This is very important for all students, no matter what school they attend, as these hours are required to graduate. There are many opportunities to achieve the forty hours needed. This includes but is not limited to things around a student’s city, school events, helping teachers or joining clubs that provide many opportunities like Key Club International, which is available to join at DBHS.

A current way to gain community service hours is the food drive. The food drive at DBHS is where you drop off canned goods at the BRACE office and you will be given service hours from donating. Another way you can get service hours is by volunteering at school sporting events by helping to set up areas like the pool for swimming events, the football field for football games, and wrestling in the gym in exchange for service hours. Students can also get service hours outside of school by spending time organizing and collecting canned goods, clothing for underprivileged or homeless people, or by volunteering at book drives for a community in need. All of these qualify as community service and can get you service hours that will lead towards students’ graduation requirement.

‘My favorite way to gain service hours is to go back to my middle school’ says Deerfield Beach High freshman, Makayla Joseph. ‘I love going back there to see my friends who are still there and previous teachers.’

There are also times when students can go to the beach with an organization and do beach cleanups to get service hours. Beach cleanups are all throughout the year, and if students can find one, they will not only be one step closer to their graduation requirement, but they will also be helping to beautify their community. There is also the possibility to gain community service hours by volunteering at events such as elementary school events. There are many schools that need volunteers for things like dances or other activities and many of these schools’ PTAs prefer giving jobs to high school students as they need the hours to graduate.

All in all, gaining service hours is easy, as long as students know their options. Volunteering can be a very selfless and helpful act just to better a community. By doing these activities, anyone can help to create unity among all different types of people. Some may also find new interests while volunteering or will find volunteering itself as their new, fun hobby.
