Big Things Ahead for the Bucks
After a 13-8 season, the Deerfield Beach High School boys’ basketball team is looking to improve and take home the state championship. Having a young roster last year, the Bucks are bringing back some key players. Senior guard Jason Morris and junior guard Jaironn Speights headline the 2022-2023 boys’ team. These players, along with a few others, can provide success for the Bucks basketball program.
Of the eight losses last season, only one game was a double-digit loss. Deerfield was always in the game and faced a lot of heartbreaking losses, especially the district playoff game against Coral Springs, where the Colts won 54-53.
“Compared to last year, our team is better, and we are going to make it to the state championship for sure,” Morris said.
With high confidence from the players, this could lead to great success for the team moving forward. It’s important to not be over-confident, but having the mentality that you will succeed will give you unlimited confidence on the court.
“The team expects to go to states, but nobody expects less than the other as we all play our role to make it to that environment and come out victorious,” Speights said.
As with every sports team, there’s always room for improvement. In basketball, communication is one of the most important skills to master on and off the court. If there’s no communication amongst the players, the team will not perform to their best ability.
“It feels like every game we play, we show the progression on the things we talk about and work on during practice, but the sky is the limit, so there’s no telling how strong this team will be,” senior guard Joe Barksdale said.
Deerfield will look for this to be a recipe for success moving into this season. With great coaching experience from head coach Kenneth Brown, the Bucks will hope to make the state championship game.
