  •  More Than A Spy
James Bond, the evolution  James Bond is a character created by novelist Ian Fleming. James Bond is a British secret agent who works for the secret service, also known as M16, under the codename 007. There are 27 films about James Bond with many different actors, from the original Bond played by Sean Connery in 1962, to Henry Cavill stepping into the role as well for 2025. Over the last decade, films have changed, but James Bond still keeps the same attitude.  With a combination of charisma, confidence, and stoic behavior, Bond has kept his attention towards action and suspense as the film goes on. Though the actor may change to play Bond, the movies keep the same plot structure, giving the audience a sense of action and waiting for what will happen next. One of Bond’s classic lines, well known around the world today, is ‘Bond, James Bond.’ This line is known to be a famous line in the film when James Bond introduces himself.  “It’s really interesting how they switch every few films,” said DBHS sophomore Lavender Palmer. Likewise, the James Bond movies have evolved immensely throughout the years, giving fans a handful of action to capture. Daniel Craig is a well-known actor of James Bond, playing him for 15 years, also being the one to play Bond the longest. There have been seven actors to play James Bond. Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. Now, Henry Cavill is stepping into the spotlight as the next and eighth James Bond of the century. The original, Sean Connery, and Daniel Craig are also the most influential actors to have played Bond. Some say that they played him the best. James Bond always has a mission in every film, and with every new actor, adapting into Bond’s character takes work. The actors change every few films to refresh the franchise and keep the thrill young and alive. Craig admitted that ‘he loved every second’ of playing James Bond. Showing the passion he has as an actor for the character he plays, possibly explaining his incredible performance. • Forever Young
The evolution of Barbie in the world Living in a perfect world, Barbie has grown up and yet ironically stayed forever young throughout the decades. Formally known as Barbara Millicent Roberts, Barbie debuted on March 9, 1959. Created by Mattel Inc. The original Barbie doll was based on the German-built Lilli doll. Far from what is known now, the original Barbie doll wore a black and white strapless swimsuit, sunglasses, earrings, stiletto-heeled shoes, and bold makeup, and she had quite arched eyebrows. Although Mattel was the manufacturer, Barbie’s life came from the heart and mind of Ruth Handler. An inspiring woman who was born on November 4, 1916. Her purpose for Barbie was to inspire young girls to imagine their future beyond motherhood and get rid of the idea that women have certain expectations in society. The name of Barbie was inspired by Ruth’s daughter, Barbara and as Barbie grew, she influenced ideas of women empowerment, beauty standards, and gender roles turning into a cultural icon after starting as just a playing doll for young girls.  Over the decades, Barbie has changed appearances and transformed. As different styles became popular in fashion, Barbie adapted. From the original look of pale white skin and bold makeup to softer looks and outfits that reflected current trends, to now being diverse with multi-cultural Barbie dolls and inspirations. The first multi-cultural Barbie doll was introduced in 1980, but some question why it took so long to promote it. It wasn’t until 2022, that Mattel released its first LGBTQ+ Barbie doll. “Barbie has always portrayed the message of ‘you can be anything you want’ especially towards a girl population,” said DBHS junior Jordan Juste. Starting in the 1960’s, Mattel introduced the friends of Barbie. Starting in 1961 with Ken, her boyfriend, and her first best friend, Midge in 1963. After that, more friends of Barbie were introduced creating a large population to be interested in her as there weren’t only new girl Barbies but also new boy Barbies. But then again, it raised suspicions as to why other cultures weren’t introduced until 1980. As much as Barbie has grown and changed appearances, she has stayed young, being a 19-year-old girl since the start.  “She’s very versatile, and there are different variations of her so she’s not just one thing, she’s implying to others that you can do anything, you’ll just be as good as the next person,” said DBHS junior Jordan Juste. Today, young and older audiences are more inclined to Barbie because of the films. In 2001, the first animated Barbie movie was released introducing a whole new look towards Barbie and her world. Creating not only a toy doll for assumingly young girls, but an entertainment enjoyment for all ages. With the most recent Barbie live-action movie from 2023, the Barbie franchise doesn’t face as many problems as it did decades ago when the world wasn’t the same. Barbie TV shows and series have also made their way into the world, like the iconic ‘Barbie Life In The Dreamhouse’ from 2012. As of 2025, Mattel has yet to release Barbie dolls surrounding the Polynesian and Pacific Islander culture. So even though Barbie has changed a lot, there’s still a lot of room for improvement and even more growth. • The Summer I Turned Pretty
Love-triangle of the decade The teen love show, The Summer I Turned Pretty sparked every fan’s heart with a second season. The first season was released only a year ago which makes it even better. Originally being a trilogy book series by author Jenny Han, it is now a TV series giving its fans a fresh look at each character. Actress Lola Tung starred as the main character Isabelle “Belly” Conklin, a sweet teenage girl caught in between a dilemma with Jeremiah Fisher, played by Gavin Casalegno and Conrad Fisher, played by Christopher Briney. These characters make up the love triangle that builds throughout the show, and a group that constantly makes fans shuffle between all three sides. Considered a coming-of-age story, The Summer I Turned Pretty focuses on Belly, who holds a romantic connection between two teenage boys who happen to be brothers. It begins with a longing crush on her childhood best friend Conrad. All she’s known is her fixation on him but during her summer break in Cousins Beach, a series of events makes her question whether she likes Conrad, or his brother, Jeremiah. Without a doubt, this is more complicated than any other love triangle. It plays with the dynamics of love, friendship, family, and morals. The first season was released on June 17, 2022, and the second season was released on July 14, 2023. The book author, Jenny Han also contributed to producing and making an appearance in the show. This helped the director and other producers get a better understanding of what was supposed to happen because they had her insight. Since the newest season came out, many new fans have shown support with its concept. The series does an excellent job portraying the emotions of a teen girl stepping out of her comfort zone and into the experiences of being 16. It gives many other teenage viewers someone to relate with. “It made me so sad, but it was entertaining and that’s why I liked it. When it comes to Belly, I kind of relate to her because it was a little hard for me growing up, from being a kid to as I am now,” said Deerfield Beach High School sophomore Anisah Mohammad. The Summer I Turned Pretty does not just give an entertaining plot and an exciting love triangle but also shows a realistic situation of a summer vacation with family friends. Lately, it was announced on August 3, 2023, that a third season will officially be coming out eventually. Although the exact date is not clear, many fans and DBHS students alike are excited to see where the story is going to take this love triangle. • Standing in the Spotlight
The MTV Video Music Awards People were celebrating this year’s VMAs on September 12th, 2023. Many celebrities and artists surprised the masses with their talent and got the recognition they deserved. In 1984, MTV began the VMAs (Video Music Awards) to award and recognize talented individuals and move their rank up in the singing industry. Since then, the VMAs have entertained their audience and have given the winners something to motivate them to keep doing what they are doing. Looking back at older VMA celebrations, things have changed since the first VMAs were held. Iconic artists of each generation perform at the VMAs to give their guests something to look forward to besides the award-giving ceremony. In one of the earlier celebrations, bands like the Smashing Pumpkins, The Rolling Stones, and artists like Snoop Dogg performed and were unforgettable. In this year’s VMAs on September 12th, 2023, artists Olivia Rodrigo, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Karol G, and Demi Lovato performed on the stage with many songs and incredible talent. Even the K-pop or Korean Pop groups Stray Kids and TOMORROW X TOGETHER performed. These talented individuals should be proud of the recognition they are granted for being invited to the award show. Few people know the importance of giving awards to those who work hard. VMAs are influential to lots of celebrities and always aim to appreciate artists who deserve it. It is wonderful how the VMA Awards bring celebrities and artists together to celebrate each other’s talent. “It’s good to recognize artists because it appreciates their work and brings them out there more. The fact that it’s so many artists in one place and getting awards for everything makes it special,” said Deerfield Beach High School freshman Brianna Rivera. Although not all that participate in the VMA awards receive an award, the awards are given to the ones that deserve it the most and worked the hardest for it. It is a fan-voted award, so it all depends on an artist’s fan base to push them to the top. In this year’s VMAs, some of the most viral winners were Taylor Swift for all three video, artist, and song of the year. Ice Spice won Best New Artist, Maneskin won Best Rock, and many more artists won awards for their talented work. Not only do the VMAs recognize singers and artists, but also influence their music to give people what they want. The award show has done an incredible job of helping artists continue their careers. Annually, numerous people look forward to watching the VMAs celebrate big and small artists. Dribbling into this basketball season Returning to the court for the upcoming basketball season are the Deerfield Beach High Bucks. Starting the season, the girls’ basketball team has their first game on November 13th against the Cypress Bay Lightnings. The boys’ basketball team also has a game on November 13th against Somerset Keys Lions marking the first of a long list of competitions. The players are pumped as they enter this next period, and a lot has changed since the last. Different expectations are rising for this year; the boys’ and girls’ basketball players are preparing to reach them with a slam dunk. “My expectations are for it to be challenging and I hope to come out a district champion,” said DBHS senior Shanice Rebecca. “I’m excited for the journey and to see how I develop on and off the court.” The Deerfield Beach High basketball initiative provides many opportunities for talented players to achieve their goals. Basketball is also a great sport to help strengthen the minds of students when it comes to partnership and competition. Players build up this innate skill with techniques like defense and rebounding drills with their teammates by their side. As soon as the games start, players have to be ready mentally and physically. The school is confident that the teams will have more wins than losses and is looking forward to the games that have yet to come. •  Hitting to success
Recap of baseball 25’  Deerfield Beach Bucks had a good ending for this season. They had some tough opponents they did not give up and they kept on going for the win. The baseball team sees themselves playing it in the future and is optimistic about it. Baseball head coach Drew Phillips is proud of the team by overcoming their challenges, and how they managed to work as a team on the field and off the field.  The baseball team recently played against teams like coral springs high school and Fort Lauderdale high school. Both teams put up a tuff fight against The Bucks, but the Bucks took both wins back home with them and the player of the game was Diego Avila. Player of the Game was awarded to him on Monday, April 7, 2025. “Even though I’m the player of the game, I still want to learn how to get better by overcoming my struggles, and train even harder next year,” said DBHS junior Diego Avila. The head coach and Assistant Coach have been gleeful with the team and how much they have improved since the start of the year and are more excited for next year. The coach tries to push every single player to their maximum potential, work as a team, and be a team on and off the field. There are only 2 underclassmen on the team, so the younger players try their hardest to be the best while developing their skills. The coach is confident that the team will be even better by next year. “I’m very grateful that they work as a team and help each other out and they are probably the best team I’ve ever had in all these years I’ve been coaching,” said Head Coach Phillips  With the season coming to an end, they are filled with hope that they’ll win next year, so they must work very hard to overcome everything they have going their way, showing full effort in practices, off and on the field. • Creative but Confined
The effects of AI on creativity  Artificial Intelligence is changing the world quickly. Many worry that AI may stifle creativity and innovation. Its impact on the creative mind is a heavily debated topic. Some believe it is a partner in writing that uncovers new ways to write and process ideas.   Artificial intelligence could lead to the parallel of many ideas. When students and workers use artificial intelligence to inspire and complete tasks, there is a risk of plagiarism and uniqueness. If all students were to use the same AI to write essays, the essays may begin to sound similar and repetitive. The fear is that people may use AI to help with tasks and become too dependent, causing them to lose the human ability to think independently and create brilliant new ideas.   “I think AI has led to declining creativity and imagination in students. Many students use AI to solve problems, leading to people not thinking about a situation and immediately turning to AI for help,” said Deerfield Beach High School freshman Daniel Perallon Vidal.  AI can also enhance creativity. Some think of Ai as a super-intelligent friend or helpful colleague to brainstorm ideas. It can analyze vast amounts of data, identify information, and suggest ideas never thought of often. Students could use AI when struggling with creative writing to explore plot lines and ideals of characters and events. The usefulness of Artificial Intelligence can even spark ideas and help overcome writing blocks.   Automated designs and tasks can free up time for focusing on other areas of projects. AI can free up space and provide time for significantly advanced, creative aspects of creation. AI can help with repetitive tasks like picking out background designs, allowing for focus on the composition of art and how to express it in an individual’s unique style.   Even the influence of Artificial Intelligence on creativity depends on personal usage. When used as a crutch, it could suppress the creative mind. If used to augment and enhance the abilities of strong writers and artists, it can bring new perspectives to the evolving society. Freeing people from mundane labor, AI has the potential to transform the thought processes of the many.   The key to effectively using AI lies in maintaining critical thinking and thoughtful approaches. People must retain control over the creative process, using AI to enhance their thoughts rather than replace their individuality. • The Resilient Spirit
National Haitian Flag Day  May 18, 2025, marks the 222nd celebration of Haitian Flag Day since the year 1803. National Haitian Flag Day always falls on May 18, when Haitians worldwide celebrate their nation through parades, parties, and ceremonies. Haitians were the first to revolt against slavery and establish the first independent black republic in the world, in 1804 against the French colonial rule. After this long-awaited victory, they became an inspiration to revolutions around the world and challenged the belief of black inferiority. The Haitian people have a long history of helping other nations by actively assisting with military assistance and providing a safe harbor to support other independent movements. They endorsed the Dominican Republic against Spanish rule and supported Mexico and other Latin nations. “Haitian flag day represents the hard work we did and the fact that we were the first black country to gain freedom”. DBHS Sophomore Marthe Eldine said, “Haitian flag day makes me feel proud because whenever I look at our flag, I remember how hard our ancestors worked and fought for it.” Numerous traditional practices occur on Haitian Flag Day, including indulging in many dishes and street food known as fritay: fried Plantains, Griot, Haitian patties, pikilz, akra, etc. Many Haitian celebrities and artists host concerts and parties, and traditional songs, dances, and chants are performed during parades. Many Haitian organizations, such as youth schools, churches, and clubs, participate and dress in cultural Haitian clothing. Women usually wear karabela, a traditional dress made of blue cotton or linen, often with red lace to symbolize the colors of the Haitian flag. Other colors like orange, yellow, and green are popular colors. Men typically wear linen shirts. Since its independence, the Haitian economy has steadily declined. Gang violence has exploded all over the island, and kidnapping is at an all-time high. The economy is facing persistent poverty and political instability. However, the Haitian people are persistent, resilient, and actively seeking solutions to improve the economy. • Danger of supercross
The dangers of monster energy supercross  The Monster Energy Supercross championship presents significant dangers, especially in the form of crashes on Supercross tracks. It is crucial to understand the key differences between Supercross and Motocross tracks. Understanding these differences is essential for safety in the sport. Motocross tracks are very long outdoor tracks with hills and big jumps, but all the jumps are very spaced out. Supercross tracks are typically found indoors or in stadiums, and all the jumps are very close together, making the track short. With supercross tracks being very short and inside small stadiums, these tracks are very tight with most turns being 180s with a jumps section immediately after the corner. The AMA also known as the American Motorcycle Association is what runs the Monster Energy Supercross championship. The Supercross championship is split into 17 rounds every weekend on Friday and Saturday. With riders on the road every weekend, the riders have to be in excellent shape. Saturday is three rounds of qualification, and then the races. Most of the danger in supercross comes out during qualifying and races because in qualifying, every rider is trying to go as fast as they can, which causes mistakes; a big enough mistake can lead to a rider having a lethal crash. The races are a lot more dangerous because all 22 riders lineup side by side, and all go full throttle to the first turn while bumping into other riders, causing many crashes. One example of some rider injuries in the 2025 Supercross season is with multiple riders such as Eli Tomac, Hunter Lawrence, Jett Lawerence, and Levi Kitchen. 450cc Factory Yamaha rider Eli Tomac broke his leg at the Tampa Supercross during qualifying; Honda rider Hunter Lawerence tore his labrum in his right shoulder and suffered multiple cracks in his humerus bone while in his heat race at Tampa Supercross; factory Honda rider Jett Lawerence tore his ACL and partially tore his meniscus in his right knee during the Glendale Supercross Triple Crown and will not be able to defend his 2024 Supercross championship. 250cc Factory Kawasaki rider Levi Kitchen had a massive crash at Daytona Supercross after the finish line jump; he went into a small jump section and hit the launch of the jump wrong, causing the bike to launch Levi over the handlebars, going head first into a small pothole in the dirt causing a broken collar bone and multiple broken vertebrates in his upper back. “When I saw Levis crash, I was hyped up because it was a huge crash, but then I started to worry about the rider because there was a red flag stopping the race,” said Deerfield Beach High School sophomore Jack Gillan. Monster Energy Supercross is a serious sport that both fans and participants should take seriously. The risks can lead to numerous injuries, making it a hazardous activity. It is important to acknowledge the dangers associated with this sport. Welcome to the world of Monster Energy Supercross. • The Unlikely Heroes
Duo uncovers a secret alien plot Two unlikely Looney Tunes characters take center stage in their newest movie, The Day the Earth Blew Up released on March 14, 2025. Porky the Pig and Daffy the Duck are well known for being some of the funniest comedic foils in history. Daffy is known for being intense, while Porky is usually very anxious. This pair has been on screens since 1935 and 1937, and they make their grand return as they attempt to save the world. This movie shines some light on the other characters in Looney Tunes. Voice actors Eric Bauza voices Daffy Duck and Candi Milo voices Petunia Pig. With a relatively small 15-million-dollar budget, The Day the Earth Blew Up grossed about 11.5 million worldwide. There is a reason why this movie is not how movies are. With Ketchup Entertainment having a small budget, there was not much advertising. The film also has many positive reviews, claiming it is incredibly nostalgic. About 15 skilled individuals received credits for this movie. The story begins when Porky and Daffy discover a secret alien mind control plan while playing in a gum factory. The two main characters are played by the talented voice actor Eric Bauza. The movie starts with Daffy and Porky looking for a way to get money to repair their house. They come across Porky’s later love interest, Petunia the pig, who works in a gum factory as a flavor scientist. Later, they realize that the gum is contaminated and used as a mind-control device. As people get infected, Porky and Daffy believe they are the only ones who can fix this. The movie’s running gag is a classic: a shocked character spitting liquid into someone’s face. In true Looney Tunes fashion, the dialogue is super quick and hilarious. The film’s style is sharper and has a cleaner animation style, compared to the old style of Looney Tunes. However, the consistencies and the wacky gags all meet the standards. In the final scene, their landlord is disturbed about the massive hole in their home and gives them ten days to fix it. They end up getting jobs to play for and fix the damage. In the words of Porky Pig, That’s all Folks!
