- Expansive JourneyMufasa journeys to see the truth On December 20, 2024, a new fixation based on the iconic 1994 animated “The Lion King” rose. Mufasa The Lion King was released and this time it focused more on Mufasa’s story instead of Simba’s. This live-action movie has an incredible voice cast, with Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Beyonce as Nala, and Tiffany Boone as Sarabi. This film is rightly packed with great songs and musicals. Director Barry Jenkins and writer Jeff Nathanson did an amazing job on this storyline of Mufasa and his brother. This film showcases Simba who has grown up and started his own family. Simba’s cub, Kiara then begins to hear the story of her grandfather, Mufasa. Which begins the look into Mufasa’s backstory. As known, in the original Lion King Mufasa was killed by Scar, his brother and for years it has been a longing question of what happened between the two. This new film shows exactly that. This story begins with young Mufasa and Scar whose real name was Taka. The heartwarming relationship between two brother cubs that soon turns into a rival. “it is weird how he would kill his brother just to take his power and how he would not have a heart to look at his eyes and not care,” said junior DBHS senior Yivany Ponce. The movie walks fans through Mufasa and Taka’s childhood from when they met, to when their rivalry begins. Director Jenkins admitted that virtual filmmaking wasn’t his thing, but the movie still came to a success. This movie is perfect for young viewers and families who are invested in the story of the Lion King. - The Bear’s AbroadPaddington makes his way to Peru The third Paddington movie came out on January 17th in the United States and February 5th in France. That is the third movie after the original Paddington movie (2014) and the sequel, Paddington 2 (2017). It started developing in February 2021 and in cinemas in the United Kingdom. Paddington is a fictional bear character in British children’s literature, who loves marmalade. He is like a teddy bear but alive, which makes him appealing to younger eyes. British author Michael Bond is the creator of Paddington. Bond’s creation of the incredible bear reflects his childhood memories of seeing evacuated children during World War II. Which inspired his creation in Paddington whose backstory starts off as a refuge with a label on his neck. Paddington is an orphaned bear from Peru who is taken by a Bristish family, despite his solemn past, Paddington has a very kind and friendly character. He always has good intentions and never means to hurt anyone. For some, this can be an important lesson towards younger audiences. In this movie, Paddington receives a letter from a home for retired bears in Peru, informing him that his Aunt Lucy is behaving strangely. In response, Paddington and the Brown family travel to Peru. Upon arrival, they discover that Aunt Lucy has gone missing in the jungle. In her cabin, Paddington finds a map and begins the search at a location called Rumi Rock. The Paddington films have always been filled with humor and child appropriate plots. Over the years of the growing films, Paddington has grown as much as the audience has. So, this new film of “Paddington in Peru,” has a different type of story since Paddington is now going to Peru, where he originally came from. “I think the third Paddington movie won’t have any deaths because the previous movies are rated PG. If it did, it would upset the audience as these characters are beloved,” says DBHS freshman Nephtalie Joissaint. A plot twist is then revealed by the end of this film, creating a shocking space for any who watches it. Director Dougal Wilson believes that believes that the films consist of funny adventures but keeps that immigrant story at heart. - The Summer I Turned Pretty Love-triangle of the decade The teen love show, The Summer I Turned Pretty sparked every fan’s heart with a second season. The first season was released only a year ago which makes it even better. Originally being a trilogy book series by author Jenny Han, it is now a TV series giving its fans a fresh look at each character. Actress Lola Tung starred as the main character Isabelle “Belly” Conklin, a sweet teenage girl caught in between a dilemma with Jeremiah Fisher, played by Gavin Casalegno and Conrad Fisher, played by Christopher Briney. These characters make up the love triangle that builds throughout the show, and a group that constantly makes fans shuffle between all three sides. Considered a coming-of-age story, The Summer I Turned Pretty focuses on Belly, who holds a romantic connection between two teenage boys who happen to be brothers. It begins with a longing crush on her childhood best friend Conrad. All she’s known is her fixation on him but during her summer break in Cousins Beach, a series of events makes her question whether she likes Conrad, or his brother, Jeremiah. Without a doubt, this is more complicated than any other love triangle. It plays with the dynamics of love, friendship, family, and morals. The first season was released on June 17, 2022, and the second season was released on July 14, 2023. The book author, Jenny Han also contributed to producing and making an appearance in the show. This helped the director and other producers get a better understanding of what was supposed to happen because they had her insight. Since the newest season came out, many new fans have shown support with its concept. The series does an excellent job portraying the emotions of a teen girl stepping out of her comfort zone and into the experiences of being 16. It gives many other teenage viewers someone to relate with. “It made me so sad, but it was entertaining and that’s why I liked it. When it comes to Belly, I kind of relate to her because it was a little hard for me growing up, from being a kid to as I am now,” said Deerfield Beach High School sophomore Anisah Mohammad. The Summer I Turned Pretty does not just give an entertaining plot and an exciting love triangle but also shows a realistic situation of a summer vacation with family friends. Lately, it was announced on August 3, 2023, that a third season will officially be coming out eventually. Although the exact date is not clear, many fans and DBHS students alike are excited to see where the story is going to take this love triangle. - Standing in the SpotlightThe MTV Video Music Awards People were celebrating this year’s VMAs on September 12th, 2023. Many celebrities and artists surprised the masses with their talent and got the recognition they deserved. In 1984, MTV began the VMAs (Video Music Awards) to award and recognize talented individuals and move their rank up in the singing industry. Since then, the VMAs have entertained their audience and have given the winners something to motivate them to keep doing what they are doing. Looking back at older VMA celebrations, things have changed since the first VMAs were held. Iconic artists of each generation perform at the VMAs to give their guests something to look forward to besides the award-giving ceremony. In one of the earlier celebrations, bands like the Smashing Pumpkins, The Rolling Stones, and artists like Snoop Dogg performed and were unforgettable. In this year’s VMAs on September 12th, 2023, artists Olivia Rodrigo, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Karol G, and Demi Lovato performed on the stage with many songs and incredible talent. Even the K-pop or Korean Pop groups Stray Kids and TOMORROW X TOGETHER performed. These talented individuals should be proud of the recognition they are granted for being invited to the award show. Few people know the importance of giving awards to those who work hard. VMAs are influential to lots of celebrities and always aim to appreciate artists who deserve it. It is wonderful how the VMA Awards bring celebrities and artists together to celebrate each other’s talent. “It’s good to recognize artists because it appreciates their work and brings them out there more. The fact that it’s so many artists in one place and getting awards for everything makes it special,” said Deerfield Beach High School freshman Brianna Rivera. Although not all that participate in the VMA awards receive an award, the awards are given to the ones that deserve it the most and worked the hardest for it. It is a fan-voted award, so it all depends on an artist’s fan base to push them to the top. In this year’s VMAs, some of the most viral winners were Taylor Swift for all three video, artist, and song of the year. Ice Spice won Best New Artist, Maneskin won Best Rock, and many more artists won awards for their talented work. Not only do the VMAs recognize singers and artists, but also influence their music to give people what they want. The award show has done an incredible job of helping artists continue their careers. Annually, numerous people look forward to watching the VMAs celebrate big and small artists. - Slam DunkDribbling into this basketball season Returning to the court for the upcoming basketball season are the Deerfield Beach High Bucks. Starting the season, the girls’ basketball team has their first game on November 13th against the Cypress Bay Lightnings. The boys’ basketball team also has a game on November 13th against Somerset Keys Lions marking the first of a long list of competitions. The players are pumped as they enter this next period, and a lot has changed since the last. Different expectations are rising for this year; the boys’ and girls’ basketball players are preparing to reach them with a slam dunk. “My expectations are for it to be challenging and I hope to come out a district champion,” said DBHS senior Shanice Rebecca. “I’m excited for the journey and to see how I develop on and off the court.” The Deerfield Beach High basketball initiative provides many opportunities for talented players to achieve their goals. Basketball is also a great sport to help strengthen the minds of students when it comes to partnership and competition. Players build up this innate skill with techniques like defense and rebounding drills with their teammates by their side. As soon as the games start, players have to be ready mentally and physically. The school is confident that the teams will have more wins than losses and is looking forward to the games that have yet to come. - Schools Against Time Progressive Schools Public schools worldwide have been catching up with society in one way or another. They have advanced with the modern age, giving access to digital tech and allowing children to keep their electronics on campus. However, some schools don’t believe that contemporary times benefit students and keep their systems the same. This decision places students behind the times, making it harder to catch up. “A school that ‘keeps up with the times’ would always try to adjust their rules and change them depending on the era. I would say keeping up with the times means not always sticking to the old stuff,” said Deerfield Beach High School freshman Stechna Etienne. Other schools and universities are incorporating technology into students’ lives. Computers, laptops, and other digital devices become increasingly used as the years pass. They even permit smartphones during lesson time. Because of this, scholars’ education level has increased drastically over time. With the digital age on our side, the learning environment becomes much easier to tackle and more engaging to interact with. Some schools aren’t as progressive as others due to insufficient funds and resources. In certain places of the world, technologies aren’t as advanced. Secluded areas around the globe don’t have the same luxuries as America, and their educational spaces lack. These places aren’t preparing their students for the modern world, as they are introduced to things they never knew before, especially when handling technology. “Teachers are good at providing opportunities to students when learning about the workforce. However, some teachers don’t allow students to grow and to learn, as they expect them to learn the topic easily,” continued DBHS freshman Stechna Etienne. Although schools and universities are making progress in adapting to modern times, there are significant challenges that need to be addressed to ensure all students have access to high-quality education that prepares them for the future. - Blood MoneyKorea’s TV sensation In the world of Korean dramas and movies, Squid Game is one of a kind. Squid Game season one was released on September 17, 2021. Season two was recently released on December 26, 2025. Since Its release, Squid Game season two has grown to become a cultural sensation, capturing audiences worldwide with its strong plot and sensitive handling of touchy themes. The result is a highly suspenseful, emotionally weighted South Korean drama. Director Hwang Dong-Hyuk came up with super creative and flexible ideas for the group. Squid Game has been a largely known series since its first debut in 2021. A wonderful returning cast with Lee Jung-Jae, Gong Yoo, Lee Byung-hun and welcoming new faces with Jo Yu-ri, Park Sung-hoon, and more. At the heart of Squid Game, there is one objective. When 456 desperate players compete mysteriously for the chance to win an immense cash prize of 456 billion won. They are not ordinary games, but a deadly version of childhood games with high stakes testing human endurance and sanity. Each episode grows more intense than the last, keeping the viewers hooked through more revelation of the characters, their pasts, and why they are willing to risk everything. “It has some crazy plot twist, and it just shows how unfair life is,” Said DBHS sophomore Jayden Santos. The catch with the games is that the players aren’t just ordinary people competing for money, but they are all living with a debt to pay, which creates a desperate need for money. But with the games being deadly, only one winner among the 456 players wins all the money. A previous character Seong Gi-Hun, played by Lee Jung-Jae, sets up an action-packed return to the show. Revealing the life, he’s been living since his victory in the last games, winning 456 billion won, and the memories he has to live with wondering if the money was really that worth it. Squid Games reached a big success since its release, leaving fans to want more from the series. These characters feel so real and the story is super unpredictable. This show has also hugely influenced pop culture, memes, Halloween costumes, and real-life versions of these games, but in a safer way. “Yes, I would if it wasn’t deadly then I would think the games would be fun to play,” said DBHS freshman Lily Williams. The thing about really Squid Games is that it deals with some universal issues: economic inequality, social pressures, and the bounds people go to survive. It raises several questions of morality, justice, and human nature. Squid Game is not a thriller but one that makes fans contemplate, feel, and question human nature. Hwang Dong-Hyuk reveals that this show is a critique of capitalism and modern society, admitting that he’s, “sick of it.” Written by Rigby Scott | Graphic Designed by Rigby Scott Published February 19, 2025 | ePathfinder | Entertainment
- Finalizing The FutureCourse Cards for 9th, 10th and 11th grade students As the academic year progresses, high school students face an important decision—choosing their courses for the next school year. Course cards, the forms used to select classes, have become a focal point of discussions among students, parents, and teachers. For many students, course card season is both exciting and nerve-wracking. Guidance counselors play a crucial role in helping students navigate their options. Schools typically provide course catalogs outlining prerequisites, graduation requirements, and advanced placement opportunities. Course selection can also have long-term implications. Students aiming for competitive colleges often feel pressured to enroll in rigorous courses such as Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes. Despite the guidance available, some students struggle with the decision-making process. Teachers, too, advise students on which courses best suit their skills and interests. With deadlines looming, students are carefully weighing their choices. Some look forward to new academic challenges, while others feel overwhelmed by the possibilities. Regardless of their final selections, course card season marks an important step in shaping their educational journey. - Up In flamesLA Wildfires A Crisis Unfolding Since the seventh of January, rapid wildfires have spread throughout California, endangering countless residents. News outlets have reported that the three areas mainly affected are Los Angeles, Riverside, and Ventura, while the cause of the fire is under investigation. Departments like the CAL FIRE San Bernardino-Inyo-Mono Unit, Los Angeles County Fire Department, and others focus on containing the fire and evacuating residents. The New York Times claims that about 92,000 people are under evacuation orders, and the death toll is over 20. Most California residents have been evacuated or anxiously waiting for the evacuation order. California residents and other U.S. citizens are concerned about how the authorities plan to contain this fire. Statistics based on the California fire of 2018 show an estimate of one month for the suppression of the fire. “I’m worried about some of my family members who live in California,” said DBHS sophomore Adin Julien. The local government has been trying to help, Governor Newsom proposed that California provide at least $2.5 billion in additional funding for ongoing emergency response efforts and to jumpstart recovery efforts for Los Angeles. The funding will support recovery and cleanup, additional wildfire preparedness, and reopening schools shuttered by the fires. There are also several shelters for people who lost their homes. There are claims that an estimated 12,000 people have lost their homes and other structures. “My parents donated money to the people in LA,” said sophomore Skarleth Cruz-Lazo Donating is a great way to support victims of the fire. Pasadena Humane, Salvation Army, World Central Kitchen, United Way of Greater Los Angeles, and many other organizations are asking for monetary donations. These donations are needed to buy supplies, emergency items, food, and water for victims of the fires. These donations go toward helping the homeless, people who have lost their homes, pets affected by the fire, and others in need. Popular celebrities and businesses like Beyoncé, Google, Paris Hilton, and Disney have donated to organizations helping victims of the California fires. During this time of struggle, much is unclear. As the death toll rises, residents grow increasingly worried. Many people are working to stop the fire and recover what was lost. People unable to volunteer can donate money to humanitarian organizations like The Red Cross or The California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund. As this devastating event continues to impact California local communities, authorities, and outside forces must work together to contain the fires and rebuild what was destroyed.
