  • Expected Student Privileges
The rights of students in schools Teens have nearly the same amount of privilege that adults have in the real world. Even further, some students, especially ones attending higher levels of school, start forming the mental capability and maturity to make their own decisions that will help them in their futures. This concept, enacted to its full potential and respected enough to treat them as the young adolescents they are, is a hard pill to swallow for some adults. The older generation looking down on the younger generation has always been a thing of the times. Even generations that are deemed to be “old” have had their fair share of the experience. Adults in general and in the educational workspace generally tend to be too overprotective that they come off strict, judgmental, and “stuck in their old ways.” At times, this can make teenagers feel inferior. However, everyone has the right to equality no matter the uncontrollable factor of age. “We [students] should have as much freedom as we deserve, and also be treated like proper beings,” said Deerfield Beach High School sophomore Dangely Duron. “We should not be seen as less by people in high positions or of older age just because we are young.” Students’ rights nowadays vary from being able to speak their minds, protest, hand out flyers, and dress with freedom, as long as it does not disrupt the class or the school policies. Teachers are not allowed to reprimand a student for a silent protest, such as refusing to stand for the pledge of allegiance. Which has a long history of being ruled constitutional then unconstitutional, back and forth, since the 1940s. Although, a majority of experiences tell the story of these rights not being upheld properly. “I get the dress code should be appropriate for school, but a lot of girls feel the judgment that comes from wearing a simple tank top, that doesn’t even distract anyone, yet guys can wear those sheer white wife beaters out in the open with no consequence,” said DBHS junior Lupita Rodriguez. While students feel that this is true and consider it a major point of discrimination, it is also important to remember that it’s not an excuse to break the rules to make a point or put others down. Students should remember not to use their rights as an offense against someone or use them to get away with things that are generally or morally wrong, such as vulgar jokes and speech about others. Rights are to ensure freedom and happiness, not a stepping stool to bullying. “Honestly, students should know what they are entitled to and not allow themselves to be torn down by people like teachers,” said DBHS sophomore Marely Mondragón. “But at the same time, they cannot use that as an excuse to act entirely out of terms and bully their classmates or even teachers, then try to turn it around and say their rights have been violated just because they get told to behave properly.” Teachers try their best to stop these instances but it’s not without the compliance and understanding of students that it becomes effective nationwide. At the same time, students’ rights should also be protected in order to prevent resent which can only do worse for both agendas. Stepping on school grounds should not strip a scholar of their rights as it is. It shouldn’t be overstepped by students either. At the end of the day a classroom is always a dynamic between the teacher and their students; adults who are trying to do their job and adolescents that are figuring their way through life. • Hispanic Heritage Month
Recognizing hispanic contributions In the effort to celebrate history with Latin American nations, National Hispanic Heritage Month is here to recognize the ancestry and achievements of both Hispanic and Latino Americans. It is celebrated every year in the United States from September 15th to October 15th to honor the cultures and bring awareness to the impact they have had on the world. “For me, Hispanic Heritage Month means connecting to my culture and understanding my roots and where I come from and understanding the achievements made by us Latinos,” said Deerfield Beach High School senior Oisa Mendez. As of the 2020 census, Latinos make up 26.6% of the Florida population and that number hasn’t been going down. In that group, there are many countries that have their own cultures creating diversity within the community. Their long history in North America combined with the range of lifestyles has influenced American society tremendously. From food to music and politics, their impact is everywhere at once. Taco Bell, Chipotle, Tijuana Flats, are just some examples of some people’s go-to choices as well as any restaurant featuring the word ‘taco’, which has become its own trademark. As far as music goes, Puerto Rico’s Bad Bunny was Spotify’s most-streamed artist in 2020 and 2021. These might seem a little surface level when it comes to impact on society, but they’ve also had a run in politics with more than 46 Hispanic members currently in the United States Congress. “Many people appreciate the Latino culture, and many can say that the food has had the most Hispanic impact on the United States. Foods and snacks made with corn and salsa, such as tacos and guacamole, are most enjoyed,” said DBHS senior Maria Rodriguez. Additionally, learning and speaking Spanish is a highly valued skill in the United States. Many consider it to be a talent that could land students and workers a better job due to a higher chance in the ability to create relationships with a larger demographic of customers. It’s also the most popular second language in America. Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States play a big part in defining what American society is today. They continue to be leaders in the government and numerous other fields, including law, commerce, science, athletics, and the arts; their efforts in the Army and other military branches fail to go unnoticed, and it’s clear to say that people can see their effect anywhere they look. It’s another great year to advance in this celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month as a growing country. The importance of honoring the journey and accomplishments of one’s culture is ever more important now with modern norms. Juniors and seniors at Deerfield Beach High are presented with an opportunity to explore paid internships, apprenticeships/trade licensing, entry-level careers with Broward County Governmental Agencies through the Annual Job Fair. In addition to the Spring College Fair, that will help students consider their options post-graduation to further education. The job fair is encouraged to be looked at like a job interview meaning, resumes are encouraged and should be completed before the event date on March 11, 2022. For the students that need a sample resume, there is a multitude posted around the school to inspire others. They can be found in the 150 hallway boards, main lobby showcase, Canvas BRACE place, Naviance, BRACE office, and announcements on Remind. “Right now, I don’t know what career I’m leaning towards so I’m hoping this career fair will help me choose and find more information on my options for a career and also what kind of work environment I want to be in, whether that be hands-on or in an office.” said junior, Thania Geffrard, one of the many students that feel this way towards career options. Many booths will be open to students on this day. Not only will Broward County Government Agencies be in attendance but so will Fortune 500 companies such as Walmart, Amazon, and The Hard Rock Alongside, Broward County Governmental Agencies will be Fortune 500 companies such as Walmart, Amazon, and The Hard Rock! • Students Brace For New Swag
Swag Bags Will be Given Out till Job Fair For the 2021-2022 College Fair, Deerfield Beach High School has decided to give out Swag Bags in resumes for sponsors like Amazon and The Seminole Hard Rock Casino to accept and possibly reach out to the students after the event. Swag Bags are rewards to students after submitting a resume to the BRACE Advisor, Ms. Denise Cruz, in room 152. These bags are given to juniors and seniors to carry around the job fair and fill up with souvenirs like pens, notebooks, business cards, and flyers.  The idea has shown to be a good incentive because it influences students to pick up every item they possibly can and not have to worry about where to put it. Everything is organized in this bag so when students go home, items aren’t lost. This way students can thoroughly look through every company’s information. Swag Bags were first introduced during the 2020-2021 academic year and have shown promising results this year since students started receiving them earlier than anticipated. “I’ve had success, students already came Thursday, and I gave out a few bags, Friday a couple of students are already coming back with their resumes. So, it already started before Monday,” says Ms. Cruz. Students won’t have to worry about limiting what they pick up off the tables to what they can hold in their hands as their swag bags can hold it for them. These can also act as a regular bag for everyday use, even outside of school. It contains the DBHS logo so kids can show their Buck Pride! • Screens of Death
Effects of the AT&T power outage AT&T is a widely known wireless service that is used widely across the globe. Hundreds of thousands use AT&T daily, and the service is greatly loved. But in a crazy turn of events, a widespread outage left vast swatches of the globe without electricity for several days. The event highlights the vulnerabilities of interconnected online systems frequently used to share information, resources, and processing capabilities. Examples of interconnected systems are computer, control, and power systems, which heavily rely on power grids and satellite systems. The groundwork for why the AT&T outage negatively impacted businesses.  The power outage had widespread complications for various industries. Technology companies, such as Google and Microsoft, experienced paramount disruptions. Google reported a temporary loss to its services, affecting everything from email to cloud storage. Microsoft faced similar problems, with disruptions to its Azure cloud platform causing significant interruptions for businesses relying on it. Financial institutions were also severely impacted. Banks JPMorgan, Chase, and HSBC had to suspend online banking and ATM services. That led to a scramble for cash and a temporary stop in financial transactions. Stock markets worldwide were in decline as trading systems were on halt. Retail and manufacturing sectors weren’t safe either. Walmart and Amazon, both heavily reliant on digital infrastructure, faced challenges in managing supply chains. Factories experienced production halts, causing delays in manufacturing and distribution.  Technology companies acted quickly to address the disruptions. Google and Microsoft collaborated on fixing things, including rerouting data through backup servers and implementing manual processing for critical services. Financial institutions developed alternative methods for transaction processing and cash distribution to minimize customer impact. Power companies worked around the clock to restore electricity. Engineers and technicians from these companies with international aid organizations deployed emergency generators and temporary power solutions to critical infrastructure, including hospitals and emergency services.  After the outage situation, there has been a global push for more robust and resilient infrastructure. Energy companies are investing in decentralized power grids and enhancing cyber security measures to protect against future threats. Efforts are also underway to upgrade the technological infrastructure that supports critical services. On the technical side, Google and Microsoft are working on improving backup systems and disaster recovery protocols. Financial institutions are revising contingency plans to make sure operations can be continued in case of major disruptions.     As the world bounces back from this global power outage, the lessons learned will be important in reshaping the future of infrastructure development and crisis management. This incident brought light to the need for greater resilience and preparedness in our increasingly interconnected world. • Distressed From The Rest
Mental Health Days  Taking a day to oneself is especially important. Sometimes, having a little self-maintenance time to reflect and care for personal needs while balancing out a week is good. The problem is that some students cannot take a break due to schoolwork. “I think students should have mental health days; sometimes school can get overwhelming and stressful,” said Deerfield Beach High School junior Thiago Codeceira. “Having a day to focus on yourself as a reminder of what you are working towards while getting all your thoughts in order.” A mental health day promotes wellness and self-care, prevents burnout, improves academic performance, and creates a better school environment. Though people stay home when sick, they miss work and get even more stressed. Their only focus should be to heal, but a day off school for mental health would not have the same focus; it would be a day for teens to evaluate themselves. It can be hard to talk about things like mental health, and sometimes, the idea of maintaining a good and healthy mind can make a real difference.  “I was constantly overwhelmed last year and went online, but I did not like that either,” said DBHS sophomore Gemma Blakeney. “If we had mental health days, I would want to come to school because it feels a little less stressful and like my mental matters.” Mental health is essential. If it is not taken care of, it can cause more issues than one would think. Taking those days off is beneficial, and the students feel the same. The idea of less stress, the feeling of being seen and considered by the school and not just another student, can do much good. If days off for mental health were implemented, more students would show up less tired and more ready to learn. •  Swords and Claws
Deadpool & Wolverine come back In addition to the iconic Deadpool series, Deadpool and Wolverine are now working side by side on a mission. The movie Deadpool and Wolverine was released on July 26, 2024, and premiered on July 22, 2024. It came out on Disney+ on July 8th. The casting of this movie includes Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and the director is Shawn Levy. Shawn Levy is known for films like The Adam Project and Free Guy, which both cast Ryan Reynolds. This made it more enjoyable for Ryan. The Deadpool movie series dates back to 2016 when the first film was released on February 12, directed by Tim Miller followed by its second movie on May 18, 2018, directed by David Leich. Deadpool’s story begins with Wade Wilson, Deadpool’s original name, where he attempts to treat his cancer through a nonofficial experiment procedure hoping it will save his life. But in the process, it unlocks his latent mutant abilities and cures him. The man leading this experiment does this all out of Wade’s will so Wade gains extraordinary healing powers but leaves him looking disfigured and not pretty. This leads him to adopt his alter ego, Deadpool. In the latest film, Deadpool and Wolverine work together when Deadpool’s world needs help, then meets Wolverine to save his world from falling apart. Wolverine, originally called Logan is an iconic X-Men character who has mutant abilities and shares a similar past with Deadpool. As the film begins, Deadpool is seen facing a big problem while living his civilian life, his home world is threatened which leads him to finding Wolverine, exploring the different timelines and multiverses to help save his world and the others.  In the Marvel Universe, Deadpool has always been recognized for his sarcastic personality and his ability to break the fourth wall, which makes him different from the rest of the characters. Throughout this intense and violent film, Deadpool and Wolverine grow a humorous dynamic that adds to Deadpool’s personality and gives the audience something new to look forward to.  “This movie is funny while also being full of action which makes it a very well-made and good movie, can’t get bored watching it,” said DBHS junior student Alexa William. The Deadpool and Wolverine film is a mix of intense action and humor as well as emotion. The movie has become a major box office success, getting 79% on Rotton tomatoes. The filming of Deadpool and Wolverine began in May 2023 at Pinewood Studios in England and wrapped in January 2024. The production time was fast, but the production crew, Ryan Reynolds and the cast made it work, staying content with the film’s production. Ever since the release of Deadpool and Wolverine, it has not been said that there would be a film following this one. But many hope this isn’t the end of Deadpool’s reign of adventures. •  A Page Turning Phenomenon
The Popularity of BookTok  Reading books was always tied with intelligence and considered a nerdy niche hobby. However, with the rise of BookTok, an online community on the popular social media TikTok, reading has become the ideal leisure activity, with cases overflowing with books. This craze has taken the online world by storm.   There is no definite date for the rise of Book Tok. However, an increase in literature-related content boosted in 2020. The epidemic COVID-19 lockdown had a profound effect on this subject. It provided the perfect opportunity to take up a new pastime. TikTok became an effective tool for communicating book recommendations. BookTok is diverse and offers many different genres that cater to every palette. For instance, Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson is a quintessential teen murder mystery with a bit of an edge. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas is a fantasy novel with romance and a dash of politics. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is about an old Hollywood starlet who shares the tale of her scandalous career and the seven lovers she met along the way.   With so many popular options, it is invertible that some will not cater to readers. Readers of Hannah Grace’s Icebreaker complained about the female lead as an annoying and dumb decision-maker. Some complain that Zodiac Academy by Susanne Valenti doesn’t have the best writing or editing. While these books were considered unsatisfactory, others were titled problematic. These Reviews are on diverse platforms like Goodreads and Barnes & Noble’s website. In the book Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton the main male lead behaves in violent and obsessive ways,  framed as romantic. This book falls into the “touch her and die” category, with several problematic titles. Colleen Hoover’s Slammed displays a teacher/student relationship as aspiring rather than highly inappropriate. Many of Hoover’s novels have come under fire for romanticizing toxic relationships.   With so many different books coming out daily, it’s hard to find one that suits a reader’s taste. With communities like BookTok however, that search becomes much less troubling.
