Celebrating women’s history month
As March comes, communities across the country are celebrating Women’s History Month, a time to honor the achievements, courage, and sacrifices of women throughout history. This year’s celebration is centered on the ongoing struggle for equality as it also honors women who have broken barriers.
Women’s History Month originated in California in 1978 as a week-long celebration before expanding nationally in 1987. Today, it is a means of amplifying the voices and achievements of women in politics, education, and everything else.
Activities during this month of celebration include panel presentations, art exhibits, and mentorships designed to spark the fire in the next generation of women who will be their leaders. Organizations are also spending the month honoring outstanding women who impacted their communities.
Alexis Carter, a high school student said, “This month is to show that every woman has the opportunity to succeed.”
Even though the month is celebratory, it is also a call to action. Women still face wage disparities and underrepresentation in leadership roles in industries. Activists highlight the necessity of continued efforts towards gender equality.
Throughout Women’s History Month, girls everywhere are encouraged to participate in activities, learn about influential women throughout history, and support women’s and girls’ empowerment causes. festivities will be topped off with various ceremonies and awards recognizing the women changing the world today.
