Learning for the Whole Family

English for Families Goal to Literacy

Technology constantly advances, and it would be naive to pass by the opportunity to use it to educate the youth. Broward County Florida Library is doing just that, starting a virtual program dubbed English for Families. Although learning how to read for high school students has long passed, younger siblings may participate in learning literacy in a fun new method.

English For Families is a five-week-long series performed online, teaching children ages 6-11 with their parents on how to develop literacy skills and a broader vocabulary through the strategic and entertaining reading of stories. With the assistance of English teachers, there will be a new goal to emphasize mastering every week for participants via the introduction of different books. The themes and vocabulary of the book are discussed, ensuring children retain reading comprehension.

The goal is to develop reading skills for the entire family to pave the road to future success. The program will also provide parents with knowledge of effective methods to assist their children with potential schoolwork they may be struggling to understand. The curriculum will focus on second language progression through different books, practicing with flashcards, and outright instruction.

The program started on April 25th and will conclude on May 25th, as registration has passed. All classes are held on Zoom from 4:30 pm-5:30 pm, explicitly scheduled to not overlap with school and work time. Sessions take place on Mondays and Wednesdays.
