Leaving it on the Mat

Wrestling season approaches

The wrestling season is nearing closer, and with that, Deerfield Beach High School gets to see the amazing wrestling team in action led by second-year Head Coach Mark Gadson. Gadson has been wrestling and coaching for 17 years and is very experienced in the sport.

DBHS has produced many successful wrestlers in the past years. Every team has a rebuilding year when their players are relatively young, and this happens to be one of those seasons.

“This year is going to be very different than last year,” Gadson said. “I have more girls and boys joining the team. As a coach, I always want to push my athletes to be great on the mat and in the classroom. My expectation for this year is to get some of my boy and girl wrestlers in the district finals.”

Wrestling is a great way to improve the athlete’s mindset on and off the mat. Students have been working extremely hard, conditioning and preparing themselves for this season to meet the expectations that they have for themselves.

“My goal is to win districts this year and make it to states,” junior wrestler Julian Garcia said. “The team is all-around amazing, and those who stick through it will make it really far.”

Like in any sport, wrestling requires a lot of hard work and training. However, that is not the only aspect that the sport includes. Wrestling can be fun for the athlete and help them get their mind off things outside school.

“I just want to have fun,” junior wrestler Trevon Chisolm said. “Going out there on the mat and competing brings joy to me.”

Ultimately, strong, hard-working students are the expectation that Coach Gadson has for his wrestlers. Deerfield Beach High will never give up, on or off the mat.
