Have cartoons lost their spark?

Cartoon shows have existed since the 1880s. Animations, graphics, and qualities have all changed since then. Now, entering the 21st century, they have changed dramatically and effectively, for good and sometimes bad.

“They are different in an effective way, but also not so good. They have a dramatic difference in graphics and animations but cannot change the storyline between older and newer ones,” said Deerfield Beach High School freshman Kevin Noel.

In 2023, Disney released a new animated film called Elemental. It was more modern and changed with higher quality and graphics. The creative storyline was interesting beforehand, but the graphics were not as good as they were in the 19th century. There was a drastic change from 2D models to 3D. The models in newer movies are more attention-grabbing for the younger audience since statistics have shown that as time passes, it becomes harder to grab the attention of newer generations.

While many cherish their nostalgic films, it’s important to note the attention to detail in many recent releases. Due to advanced technology, animators can capture more detail through techniques like 3D rendering and motion capture. These advances improve the visual experience and storytelling, making films more engaging and memorable. Newer animated films showcase these new tools and demonstrate how they have helped the animation scene.

“I think they are good at what they do; movies have gotten so many reviews not just for the storyline but obviously for the actors that play their roles perfectly,” said DBHS sophomore Sarah Parrish.

There is nothing wrong with rewatching old movies and enjoying them over newer releases; it all comes down to preference. Older movies give people the feeling of reliving their childhood as if they have yet to grow up and can escape the world as it has become today. As old shows and movies become treasures for older generations, it is likely many children today find new releases to be their treasures. Nostalgia is different for everyone as the time’s change and everyone grows older, but there is no better feeling than cuddling up on the couch and watching the one thing that makes one feel like they’re 5 again, just barely experiencing the world.
