Mental Health Awareness Month

Breaking the Silence

With the calendar now rolled out into May, communities across America come together to observe Mental Health Awareness Month—a time dedicated to breaking the silence on mental health and promoting access to vital resources.

First celebrated in 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month aims to increase knowledge about mental health illnesses, encourage discussions, and advocate for policies that support mental well-being. This year’s theme, “Your Mind Matters,” reminds us to be mindful of our mental health on a daily basis.

“More awareness is the first step in healing,” says Ali Lopez, “When we open up and talk about mental health, we show it’s okay for the others to do the same.”

Nationwide, during the month of May, organizations are sponsoring events like mental health fairs, educational webinars, support group meetings, and community walks. Social media campaigns are also picking up steam, encouraging people to share their own stories and spread messages of hope and recovery. Schools and workplaces are also getting on board, adopting mental health initiatives like mindfulness workshops, access to counseling, and flexible work policies.

“We can establish a trend of compassion and kindness, if we work together,” states Lopez.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health. Advocates call on people to screen themselves and others, call for help when needed, and continue the conversation, beyond May.
