More Than Cheer

What the season looks like for cheerleading

The DBHS cheerleaders are more than just some high school students. Their squad is a family that has the dedication and school spirit to fuel them. Their weekly schedule is busy, as Mondays and Tuesdays are dedicated to stunts, while on Wednesday and Thursday, they focus just on the cheer aspect. Fridays are all about getting hyped up for game day.

“Last year, it was all attitudes; nobody wanted to listen, nobody really took things seriously. This year, there’s a big difference. We rarely have problems, we get things done, and we’re more open to trying new things,” Junior Ta’Niyah Kintchen said

In the off-season, the work doesn’t stop; the cheer squads’ practice usually starts with cheers and wraps up with stunts, keeping everyone ready throughout the year. The team centers everything they do around three core values: positivity, teamwork, and discipline.

One of their favorite memories was attending FAU Cheer Camp. Waking up at 5:00 a.m. every morning wasn’t easy, but the team kept their energy high and even motivated other schools around them. Their hype stood out a lot as they were able to bring home trophies.

“On and off the field, the cheerleaders carry a bright spirit and bring uplifting energy to everyone they meet,” Junior Briana Joseph said.

Cheerleading isn’t just about performances. Building unity is just as important. From bonding events to checking in with each other, the squad makes it a priority to support one another and ensure that every member feels welcome and included.
