More Than Four?

Is it useful to be multilingual

Multilingualism is the ability to speak multiple languages. Learning a language other than one’s first language can be useful and expand one’s worldview and mind. However, as of 2024, only 17% of people worldwide speak four languages or more. Many argue that learning new languages is too hard or more difficult than worth it. To elaborate, people believe that it would be too difficult to be proficient in different unknown languages.

“Being multilingual is a great thing, it opens the door to other worlds and creates more opportunities,” said Deerfield Beach High School junior Brianna Barton. “I think more people should be open to learning new languages, it does more good than people think.”

Multilingualism has many benefits in different areas. The majority of these benefits are cognitive. Learning more languages can improve thinking or linguistic skills because switching between these languages can challenge a person to think better. Multilingualism can also make someone more open-minded. With a new language, one can gain a better perspective on the world and what joys others feel or their struggles.

The primary advantage of being multilingual is the increased career opportunities. Many careers seek people who can speak more than one language because it can enhance the quality of their businesses. Being multilingual can also allow people to connect effectively. Speaking multiple languages can spark an understanding of other cultures and build trust.

“Living in Florida and being in a culturally diverse state, there are many instances where you come across people who speak other languages,” said DBHS senior Donovan Maignan.

Multilingualism can be beneficial to anyone. The primary downside is the time and dedication required to become proficient in many languages. In addition to the time needed to learn more than four languages, there is a chance that language dominance may occur. There are other disadvantages such as choosing what language to use in different situations. Overall, the ability to speak more than four languages can be either helpful or stressful.
