Usage of  AI in Classrooms

Recent advancements in AI have raised concerns among parents and teachers. Some students have been using AI to complete their schoolwork, which has reasonably raised debates. While AI can assist with understanding various subjects, people are skeptical about using it at school. Some people advocate for a complete ban on AI in schools, while others believe that students should be taught to use AI as a helpful tool rather than viewing it as a replacement for their work.

Even though AI has recently developed, it does have its drawbacks. According to Walden University, AI only knows what it has been trained on, which can be biased and should not be relied on. Students using AI too much instead of asking a teacher for help can also make them feel isolated. AI is not completely reliable and makes mistakes, which spreads misinformation. The concern of students using AI to cheat resulted in another AI tool being used to detect if a student used it, which can also sometimes falsely accuse a student of something they did not do.

“I feel like most of the teachers here really hate AI,” said Deerfield Beach High School sophomore Dylan Ortiz.

Instead of working against AI teachers and students should learn to use it efficiently. It can be used for simple things like checking grammar, giving inspiration, or expanding one’s vocabulary. Even if students abuse AI, it will show in their test grades if they understand the material or not. Students can also use AI to lighten their load, giving them more time to help their students. AI is a speedy way to solve little problems, not a replacement for educators.

“I use AI to study or if I don’t get what the teachers are saying,” said DBHS sophomore Jizel Jean.

The answer isn’t more AI or no AI at all. Schools need a healthy balance. People need to embrace the future and learn to use this technology rather than completely stand against it, but neither should they depend on it. AI is improving every day so instead of being left behind, schools should progress with it. AI isn’t perfect and shouldn’t be relied on, but it is a great speedy way to make students’ and teachers’ lives a little easier.
