New Year, New Events

What to expect in the new year

Tides of change begin to wash over Deerfield Beach High as the school welcomes its students into another year of activities. The wheels are in motion for many exciting events, opportunities, and renovations awaiting in the coming months.

DBHS kicks off the school year with an expanding cast of classes, alongside many changes to faculty and facilities. Through a nearly 1.2-million-dollar project, the school is undertaking a massive renovation toward the media center and Culinary Arts department. Planned to be completed by the end of the year, students can expect new flooring, lighting, and furniture embellishing the library. Additionally, plans to renew equipment and amenities will later begin for young chefs to excel with proficiency.

DBHS strives to provide students with more resources in extracurricular and interpersonal activities beyond education. These developments emphasize the high school experience and making memories to last a lifetime. Students are encouraged to improve their communication and soft skills through the many resources provided in school. Services include Trio Upward Bound and the College Tour Program, which offer to help develop crucial skills for students during post-graduation.

“Anything that has preparation or academic competition like with FSPA where students put a game plan together and then follow through benefits our soft skills that we must develop,” DBHS principal Jon Marlow said. “Anywhere we’re getting away from the academics and having the high school experience is what I’m looking forward to.”

Myriads of exciting displays and activities are to be presented in DBHS throughout the year. From Black History Month and multicultural events to thespian performances and club ceremonies, many social activities are to follow. The school offers countless volunteering and community-building exercises that enrich the adolescent experience. Additionally, many college-preparatory programs extend to cultivate leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork, including the magnet programs and Dual Enrollment.

However, there are a few Dual Enrollment classes, such as Intro to Business and Education that have been rescinded. Although revoked due to the promotion of new assistant principals, Mr. Pizzo and Mr. Taylor, options in the program still exist. Despite this, former teachers of the classes now plan to schedule options for DE students as the remaining classes continue as usual.

“Being part of all the extracurricular activities that we do here helps you build those soft skills, enjoy the high school experience, and then make memories for a lifetime,” Marlow said. “We want the students to remember the positive aspects and to make some memorable experiences at the high school and be a part of something.”

While providing the necessary academic assistance for students, Deerfield Beach High School also illuminates the importance of nurturing skills. Many resources are provided to individuals, from mental health services in the Beach House to skill-enhancing extracurricular opportunities. There are many things to expect throughout the school year that aid in succeeding beyond education and making lasting memories.
