Wicked: for good arrives in theaters
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are set to clash in the eagerly awaited sequel to Wicked, battling to shape the future of Oz. Wicked: For Good will be the second act of Glinda and Elphaba’s story, a film adaptation of the 2003 musical that recently reached the hearts of film lovers last year. For Good is scheduled to release on November 21, and fans have expressed mixed feelings about what they think is to come.
GWicked has been an existing stage musical for over 20 years, and most fans already know what to expect of the ending; however, there are some things that are confirmed to change. Many people have been keeping themselves occupied during the wait with theories and speculations based solely on the teasers and trailers. For example, many are curious about a scene in the stage production where Nessa Rose, the Wicked Witch of the West, is able to step out of her wheelchair and walk for the first time. Filmmakers and Nessa’s actress, Marissa Bode, decided to change the storyline to be more respectful of the disabled community, as well as inclusive of Bode, who is a wheelchair user herself. This change has sparked some theories about how the story will work around this significant plot point. Some say the movie will not include this scene at all, while others trust director John M. Chu to make a decision that is respectful while being as magical as the original.
This sequel also introduces two new original songs to the soundtrack: “No Place Like Home,” sung by Elphaba, and “Girl in the Bubble,” sung by Glinda. Both of the main girls are getting new solos for this movie, and fans are heavily anticipating hearing Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande bring something fresh to the already legendary musical.
“I’m really excited for that new Glinda song. Ariana Grande did so well at making the role her own, so I’m glad we get to see more original stuff from her,” says DBHS Junior, Maricel Vargas.
As for the rest of the soundtrack, fans are just as excited for Grande’s and Erivo’s rendition of “For Good,” and Elphaba’s fan-favorite solo, “No Good Deed.” Both songs have been teased in the trailers, which included snippets of instrumentals, isolated vocals, or both. Many are also happy to see Nessarose’s song, “The Wicked Witch of the East,” appear on the official soundtrack, as it was never recorded by the original cast of the stage production.
“I watched the full musical on YouTube, and ‘No Good Deed’ easily became one of my favorites. I think Cynthia [Erivo]’s voice is perfect for Elphaba, and she already sounds perfect in the trailers,” Vargas adds.
