Search of a missing mother
A new thriller and mystery movie dubbed Missing was released last month starring Storm Reid as the main character, June. Throughout the movie, June searches for answers when her mother, Grace, vanishes while on vacation in Colombia with her new lover.
While stranded in Los Angeles thousands of miles away from her mother, June ingeniously makes use of every piece of cutting-edge technology at her disposal to try to locate her before it’s too late. Kevin, her mother’s lover, and Grace were supposed to be picked up by June at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), but they didn’t arrive.
After becoming dissatisfied with the FBI’s apparent lack of progress, June chooses to investigate using a variety of digital resources at her disposal, including Facebook messages and internet search history. She also employs Colombian gig worker, Javier, who fulfills June’s instructions in exchange for a minimal payment.
“I would definitely use social media and technology to find someone who is missing and way faster to track and find someone’s last whereabouts,” said DBHS sophomore Gabriel Blakely.
June grows suspicious of Kevin then hacks into his Gmail account and finds several aliases as well as a criminal history of defrauding numerous women. Naturally, June believes Kevin kidnapped her mother for the money and has Javier seeking signs of them in Colombia while she conducts her investigation. She follows Kevin’s prior moves to Nevada, where she meets Jimmy, a pastor, who assures her that Kevin has turned his life around and now truly loves Grace.
This movie is riveting and has many fans edging over their seats. Many plot twists and dark secrets are revealed throughout the movie which induces a sense of curiosity to explore. That is what makes films such as Searching andMissing intriguing. In addition to being a high-concept thriller with dramatic performances, the plot also feels true to the dangerous side of society, even in the most absurd situations.
So much of the internet is carried into everyday life, unintentionally dispersing remnants of it as we swipe and click. However, Missing emphasizes that there is nothing like reality hitting like a brick, for better or worse.
