Minions return with an origin story
Children’s films of superheroes usually include supervillains trying to destroy or rule the world. Although villains are labeled evil, some villains come off to the audience as likable, such as in the upcoming comedy film “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”
An addition to the film series Despicable Me and a prequel to the 2015 “Minions” movie, the film “Minions: The Rise of Gru” was confirmed by the production company Illumination to be coming out in July 1, 2022. It will come out in theaters after two and a half years of being announced.
In the official trailer is 12-year-old Felonius Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) in the 1970s, causing trouble in the town. He has plans to become the greatest supervillain, so when his favorite villain group, the Vicious 6, announced an opening spot in their group, he seizes the opportunity to show his abilities. But instead of praises, he is belittled.
After being undermined, Gru steals their precious stone with the help of the minions (voiced by Pierre Coffin), assuming the villains will be impressed and reconsider letting him join. Instead of impressing
them, it enrages them. Gru and the minions are caught in a cat and mouse game with the villain group as they look for a way to protect themselves.
Illumination studio announced the production of the movie of Gru and the minions back in 2019. Due to the pandemic affecting production, the release date was pushed back twice. The announcement from two and a half years ago made a record in film history for being the longest movie to be delayed from its release.
Similar to how “Minions” explored the origins of the little yellow indestructible minions, previous films have also included Gru’s backstory but not how he walked into the path of villainy. As a child, Gru didn’t have many friends as the children would bully him, which sounds like a cliche choice to walk the path of villainy to get back at the world.
It can be exciting to watch heroes save the world. It does not mean villains like Felonious Gru cannot be fun characters, including in a child film. A good-bad villain needs their own movie like “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”
