America’s fastest growing sport
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America. Sport is currently growing in popularity, but these are the things that make it so special. Pickleball has been around since 1965 but did not become an official sport until 2022. It has been around for about 61 years. Who could have known that what started off as a solution to boredom between 3 friends grew into the fastest growing sport in America.
The creators of pickleball were Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. In the Summer of 1965, looking for a way to kill boredom on a rainy day, the friends improvised the game using available equipment. Including a badminton court, ping-pong paddles, and a plastic bag. By the 2000s-2010s, Pickleball had spread throughout schools, community Centers and retirement communities. In 2020, during the COVID period, the sport took a drastic leap in popularity. By the year 2021, the TV coverage, Pro leagues, and social media have helped turn pickle into its current mainstream.
Pickleball has become so popular because it is easy to learn. The rules were simple and easy, which made it beginner friendly. The sport is also very social and isn’t intense. Pickleball is usually played in doubles with a partner, which makes it social and fun. Also, it wasn’t as intense as tennis, so kids, adults, and seniors can all enjoy the sport. Social media also played a part in pickleball’s popularity. As more professional Leagues increased, and social media exposure appeared, interest in the sport of pickleball exploded nationwide.
