 Powering Up The Future

Bringing in the Supacell show

A Netflix original, “Supacell” is a TV show directed by Rapman and Sebastian Thiel. The show premiered on June 27th, 2024, with six episodes for Netflix featuring British superheroes. It was extensively shot in Peckham and Camberwell, specifically Rye Lane and Walworth Road. The main characters are played by Tosin Cole, Nadine Mills, Josh Tedeku, Calvin Demba, and Eric Abrefa.

The plot follows the story of five ordinary black people, Michael (Tosin Cole), Tazer (Josh Tedeku), Sabrina (Nadine Mills), Andre (Eric Abrefa), and Rodney (Calvin Demba) who are connected to a disease called sickle cell through their family. They develop superpowers in very different ways and join forces to defeat a secret organization that is after people like them, with superpowers as well.  As the story progresses, the audience learns about how all the characters’ abilities emerged and the reasons they unite to fight the secret organization. Each character has a personal reason driving them to confront the organization.

The characters do not come together quickly, but it is up to Michael to bring them together because he was given the most unique ability.  They each must find common ground, but it becomes clear that Michael needs them to unite the most.

“In the beginning I was interested in the characters backgrounds and learning about some of their situations made me sad, but when I got to the end, I was mostly annoyed because the characters wouldn’t work together well,” said DBHS freshman Kiara Ordonez- Diaz.

Besides the main story, emotional events are portrayed, giving the characters their own stories besides fighting with their abilities. Graphic action and gang activity are consistently shown, which is why most fans are older, with teens and adults.

Making Supacell wasn’t easy. The production crew planned on starting the series with the events of season two, but changed their minds, deciding they should take it back to when everything started. The casting was a complicated part of figuring out this show. Especially with the character Tazer, played by Josh Tedeku. But Rapman found the best qualities in Josh to play Tazer. He said, “He was even better in person. He had this calmness and stillness. The gang in Supacell are your typical street kids. But Tazer is more thoughtful. He doesn’t raise his voice. We needed someone who understood that. There aren’t many actors like Josh who have that emotional range at 19.”

Since Rapman wants to continue the storyline, it has been confirmed that the show will be renewed for season two. It has not been said when season two will be released, but it is being anticipated for the year 2025.
