Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary lead singer of the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath and co-founder, was born in Marston Green, United Kingdom. Osbourne was known as the Prince of Darkness and Godfather of Heavy Metal due to his dark music style. And for his contributions to the genres of heavy metal and rock music.
The band Black Sabbath was formed in 1968 in Birmingham, England, originally known as the Polka Tulk. They adopted Black Sabbath in 1969. Ozzy Osbourne stayed in the band from 1968 to 1979 before being fired due to alcohol and drug abuse. Soon after being fired, Osbourne started his solo career, releasing Blizzard of Ozz in 1980 and Diary of a Madman in 1981, both of which were successful, leading to crazy features such as “Crazy Train.” His crazy actions and activities soon earned him his well-known title, “Prince of Darkness”, especially after his most controversial moment, biting off a bat’s head live on stage.
Osbourne had managed to sell over 100 million albums during his solo career; meanwhile, when he was in Black Sabbath, the group managed to sell about 75 million albums. He was admitted into the Rock Hall of Fame not once but twice. Once with his band, and soon later, another time as a solo artist. After a few years, he rejoined Black Sabbath from 1997 to 2005 and again for their last studio album, 13, in 2013.
Osbourne declined to perform at Lollapalooza in 1996. He and Shannon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife and manager, created the heavy metal festival Ozzfest in response to the rejection they received from Lollapalooza. It was known as payback- but it soon became something more than that. The first Ozzfest occurred on October 25- 26, 1996, in Phoenix, Arizona, and Devore, California. The event lasted two days and was considered a success, ultimately becoming an annual Ozzfest tradition. The Ozzfest included different subgenres of metal, ranging from thrash, groove, death, industrial, gothic, metalcore, and nu metal. Numerous bands like Korn, Slipknot, and even Black Sabbath themselves had performed at the Ozzfest. The Ozzfest had over 3.6 million fans attend in general, with the first Ozzfest holding 39,000 fans in Arizona. The Ozzfest UK festival, at Donington Park in England, 2002, was one of the highest-attended single-day Ozzfests, having an audience of approximately 60,000 people.
“Ozzy Osbourne had a wide impact on music, and since his music originated from the 60s, it warped the view of how people could listen to everything going on in the decade”, DBHS junior Abigail Payne said.
Ozzy Osbourne dedicated almost his whole life to his singing career, first debuting in 1967 and solo debuting in 1980. He spent 11 years in Black Sabbath after being fired, and lasted 20 years in the band after rejoining, a total of 31 years in the band. His final concert with the band was in 2017. Ozzy’s last solo concert was in July 2025. He passed away on July 22nd, 2025, in Jordan, United Kingdom.
