All about the important half-days
With the upcoming Deerfield Beach High School professional study day (PSD), it is important for all students to be informed as to what a professional study day is and what their purpose is. These days are important and occur every year on the school year calendar, about four times. PSDs happen in high schools annually to allow teachers and staff time to collaborate, learn new skills, and develop their expertise. For students, they can benefit from the extra time to study for any upcoming tests and/or catch up on their assignments.
For Deerfield Beach High School, the next Professional Study Day is November 7th, a Thursday. There has been one previous PSD, on September 5th, and the last two for the 2024-2025 school year will be occurring on February 6th and April 3rd of next year. On these dates, students will arrive at school at the usual time but leave at 11:40. This time frame is like the regular early release day schedule, with there only being an hour difference between each day’s release time.
‘I feel like professional study days are a good thing because with the little amount of early release days and days off this year, it’s good to give students a break and time to study with all of the classes they have to take each day’ says sophomore student, Paige Elliott.
For some students, PSDs can also be a good opportunity to get the community service hours needed for graduation. Getting out of school at 11:40 instead of 2:40, for example, gives students 3 extra hours to use to their advantage. There are volunteering opportunities that could occur earlier in the day that would not be accessible on a normal school day.
Professional study days are very crucial to both educators and students alike and can help in many ways. By allowing teachers to collaborate, they can all improve their teaching techniques and learn from one another. As for students, they can use PSDs in many ways to improve themselves and their educational journey. All students, teachers and even parents should know the importance of these days and how they can benefit everyone involved.
