Rise to The Top

Movie K-pop songs jump to the top of the charts

Move aside BTS, Blackpink, and Twice, and other big-league K-pop groups, there’s new music in town, and it’s not going down easy. A popular movie called K-pop Demon Hunters caught the hearts of many in just weeks. The film was released on June 20th, 2025, and reached global charts on Spotify on July 5th, 2025, meaning they were able to make Spotify global charts in just 15 short days and make records that no one saw coming. The movie’s plot, animation style, and included culture and underlying romance have everyone on their feet. The sister-like bond that Rumi, Mira and Zoey have is admirable and beautiful. The movie’s original songs surpassed 100 million streams in just one week, a feat faster than BTS’s “Butter,” which reached 99.4 million streams in a week, or Blackpink’s “Pink Venom,” which garnered 41.2 million streams in a week. DBHS eleventh grader, Mariana Mujica, stated that “The Saja Boys have some of the best K-pop songs I’ve ever heard in a while.”

Each song has its own meaning that ties not only to the movie but to the viewers as well. Take a look at the song “What it Sounds Like”; this song shows not only how Rumi, Mira and Zoey shouldn’t try to hide their true selves from the world, but the song was given in a way that viewers could relate to it themselves. The lyrics to “Free” have a different but similar effect because of the expression of emotional connection between two people from opposite sides. This can be compared to the story of Romeo and Juliet, since they have the concept of forbidden love and a desire to escape and be free without judgment. Even though K-pop Demon Hunters is a fictional movie, it seems to be very realistic in how real K-pop idols tend to be in real life with their fans, though less competitive with other groups. K-pop groups such as Stray Kids, BTS, Twice and almost every other group all have strong connections with each other and treat everyone in their group as family. Though it’s uncommon for K-pop groups to have fewer than four members, Huntrix really does make it work.

Many newer K-pop groups, such as CORTIS, Xlov, KickFlip and many more groups have many records set by Huntrix and Saja Boys to look forward to breaking in the future, as well as older groups like Stray Kids, NewJeans, Seventeen, Itzy and many more.
