Science day, the day to debate on scientific issues

World Science Day is an important global event established by UNESCO in 2001, celebrated annually on November 10th. Its main purpose is to raise awareness about the vital role of science in our everyday lives and to encourage meaningful discussions on emerging scientific issues. In our rapidly changing world, where scientific advancements affect nearly every aspect of society, this day serves as a crucial reminder of science’s role in creating a sustainable future for everyone.

World Science Day is a truly inclusive celebration, taking place in various settings such as schools, universities, science museums, research institutions, government buildings, and public spaces around the world. This broad participation demonstrates that science is a universal pursuit that transcends borders and cultures. UNESCO plays a key role in organizing the event from its headquarters in Paris, providing guidance and resources to assist local communities in planning their celebrations.

For example, “Building Trust in Science” addresses the increasing public skepticism toward scientific findings, urging individuals and communities to foster connections based on mutual understanding and respect. Similarly, “Science for and with Society” emphasizes the need for collaboration between scientists and the public, focusing on community engagement to address local needs and concerns.

In recent years, several innovative projects have been linked to World Science Day. For instance, the 2023 theme, “Fostering Trust in Science,” aimed to strengthen the relationship between the public and the scientific community. This initiative is crucial during times of widespread misinformation, as it promotes transparency and communication, essential for building public trust in scientific research.

Another significant theme, “Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development,” highlighted in 2022, underscored the necessity of fundamental scientific research for long-term well-being. It reinforced the importance of investing in basic fields like physics, chemistry, and biology to tackle global challenges such as health, food security, and environmental sustainability.
