Impact of influencers
Scrolling through TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube has become common for most people who own a cell phone. Influencers play a major role in shaping trends, opinions, and behaviors among today’s teens. From fashion, music, fitness, and social issues, social media has shaped how teens see the world.
On the positive side, influencers can be inspiring role models. Many promote creativity, confidence, and freedom of self-expression. They usually use their platform to make teens feel good about themselves and to embrace who they are. Educational influencers also enhance learning by explaining complex topics in an engaging and fun way. For students who may not feel represented in traditional media, influencers can foster a sense of community and belonging.
“I think influencers help us, as teenagers, to escape reality for a little while and care about meaningless content.” Said Deerfield Beach High School senior Ellen Travassos.
Influencer culture presents certain drawbacks. Highly polished versions of their lives for online audiences create unrealistic expectations. Constant exposure to “perfect” bodies, lifestyles, and achievements may lead to low self-esteem.
“I feel that teens should be raised by their parents, and not strangers on the internet,” Said DBHS senior Serena Parsons.
Furthermore, sponsored posts and advertisements are often presented as authentic recommendations, blurring the lines between genuine suggestions and marketing. This situation may lead to overspending or the adoption of unhealthy habits, such as extreme dieting or engaging in risky challenges for views.
Influencers have become powerful voices in youth culture, but like most things, good things eventually come to an end. By learning to think critically and being aware of the content consumed, people can enjoy the benefits of influencer culture and avoid falling into a follower mindset. It is more important for teens to remember that real life is more than what appears on a screen.
