New live-action Peter Pan movie
In 1902, James Matthew Barrie wrote a story about a boy named Peter Pan, who refused to grow up. 50 years later, Disney adapted the story into a movie. Both children and adults loved it and there have been many live action adaptations of the story since then. Though, none of them were made by Disney again, until now.
Disney brings the Darling family to life with Ever Anderson as Wendy, Joshua Pickering as John, Jacobi Jupe as Michael, and Alan Tudyk and Molly Parker as Mr. and Mrs. Darling. On top of that, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell are played by Alexander Moloney and Yara Shahidi. Last but not least, the infamous Captain
Hook is played by Jude Law and the bashful Mr. Smee is played by Jim Gaffigan. The movie was released on April 28th, 2023 on Disney Plus.
Peter Pan and Wendy tell the story of Peter, Wendy, and their adventures in Neverland. Wendy is looking to avoid going to boarding school when she meets Peter, a boy who does not want to grow up. Peter and his fairy friend, Tinker Bell then take on Neverland with the siblings.
In Neverland, Wendy, John, and Michael meet the Lost Boys and Girls. These are Peter’s friends and family in a sense. Wendy meets magical mermaids and fairies while she is there. She ends up in a conflict and has an unpleasant interaction with a crew of pirates led by Captain Hook.
Captain Hook is Peter Pan’s nemesis. He is a villainous pirate who is incredibly intelligent and very charming. He has a hook for a hand on his right hence his name. In the original animated Disney movie, Captain Hook ends up stealing Tinkerbell from Peter Pan as a part of his plan to get revenge.
Speaking of Tinker Bell, this new live-action remake has a few noticeable changes. In the live-action, Tinker Bell is played by an African-American woman instead of someone who resembles that of the fair-skinned blonde fairy that everyone knows and loves.
“I honestly don’t feel any negative feelings towards it. Sure, the original Tinker Bell was white and blonde, but her being white and blonde had nothing to do with the storyline and didn’t affect it either,” said Deerfield Beach High School sophomore Jermain Limprevil.
This same change in casting can also be seen in Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid when the actors do not look identical to their animated counterparts.
“I believe this is also a great opportunity for representation of girls who look like me. Tinker Bell is a mystical creature whose existence is make-believe. Her race won’t affect how the story goes at all so, I’m glad they’re switching it up,” said DBHS junior Lailah Dorelus.
Nonetheless, the movie provides a new nostalgia for a new generation and is a big hit on the Disney franchise.
