Why is study hall so important?

Study hall plays an important role in the daily schedule at Deerfield Beach High School. It provides students with structured time during the school day to complete assignments, study for tests, and seek academic support. for many students, this period helps balance the demands of multiple classes and extracurricular responsibilities.

“Study hall is a time for me to unwind after having rigorous classes back-to-back,” says Deerfield Beach High School student Makayla Joseph.

Across Broward County Public Schools, the study hall period became a major topic of discussion during recent conversations about changing the school schedule. the district considered moving from an eight-period block schedule to a seven-period day, which would have eliminated the personalization period that functions as a study hall. Students, parents, and teachers expressed concern that removing this time would increase stress and reduce academic support, particularly for students enrolled in honors and advanced placement courses.

Research supports the value of a supervised study hall, as it encourages organization, improves time management and allows students to use school resources such as tutoring and teacher assistance. Having designated time during the school day to complete work can also reduce the number of unfinished assignments students take home.

“Personally, I hate doing homework at home,” Joseph added. “I prefer doing all my work in school, it’s just a better environment for me.”

At Deerfield Beach High School, study hall is especially significant because it supports students with different home environments and responsibilities. By keeping the personalization period in the schedule, Broward County acknowledged the impact that daily structure has on student success. Study hall is not simply free time, but an essential part of supporting academic achievement.
