Teamwork Makes The Dreamwork

The road to LLWS Champ

The Little League World Series (LLWS) was a big hit this year with Florida taking its first-ever win in this tournament. The tournament brings together the best Little League teams from around the world. Teams from different regions, including the US and international leagues. These teams compete in long running and memorable games.

“Growing up with baseball and having siblings that have played, it is cool seeing a team from your home state win something that big,” said DBHS Sophomore Audrianna Calvet.

While Lake Mary might not have been considered underdogs in this tournament, they had many challenges on the road to becoming LLWS champions. Lake Mary started with a win 2-1 against the Midwest in the US bracket which gave them a lead. But then in their second game, they lost to Texas which put them in the loser’s bracket they fought hard and won the next 2 games to get them to the US championship game.

“As Someone who watched the Little League World Series this year, it was exciting to watch Lake Mary fight their way up from their loss.” Said Sophomore Jadden Perdomo.

This game was noticeably big as they would have to go up against the team that sent them into the loser’s bracket Texas. Everything was going Texas’s way with a lead of 4-0 in the third inning but as the game went on Florida started chipping away with their lead and in the end, Florida won with a lead of 10-7. Now that they had won this game, they were on their way to the LLWS championship game.

They were up against Chinese Taipei who in this tournament had won all their games and with both teams coming out strong Chinese Taipei got the lead 1-0 up until the 6th inning of the game. With Lake Mary tying it in the 6th the game had to go into extra innings. With no runs scored in the 7th inning, they went into the 8th inning, which was still tied.

Lake Mary’s Lathan Norton was on second base in the bottom of the 8th inning, Hunter Alexander bunted to move him along. Chinese Taipei’s pitcher Chiu Wei-Che easily scooped it up and threw to first. Still, the first baseman was not there due to a miscommunication and Norton made it home to win the game leaving Lake Mary the first team ever from Florida to be LLWS champions.
