Deerfield Beach High School magnet programs

Deerfield Beach High School (DBHS) is a public high school that offers three magnet programs: Communications/Broadcast Arts (CBA), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Urban Teacher Academy Program (UTAP). Magnet programs are specialized courses offered to a group of students that focus on a specific area of study.

CBA focuses on the process of creating and broadcasting media content through various communication methods like audio, video, and graphics. The students use professional equipment like recording studios, television studios, and computer graphics labs. The curriculum includes many courses like journalism, television, film, graphics, and radio. Students participate in activities such as producing morning announcements, developing yearbooks, writing newspapers, creating films, and web design. If students are interested in Broadcasting, this program is excellent for them. To be accepted into the CBA program, students must have an unweighted GPA of 2.5 or higher and an F.A.S.T PM3 score (E.L.A & Math) level 3 or above. The application to be in CBA was from December 2, 2024, to January 21, 2025. The open house was on Monday, December 9, 2024, at 6 pm. The magnet program coordinator at CBA is Jeffrey Romance, who has been in this role for 28 years. With his extensive experience, he enjoys witnessing the creativity of the students. Many of the CBA teachers were once students at Deerfield Beach High School themselves.

‘I feel that the CBA program is a really great program,’ says Christoph Powell, a sophomore student in CBA. ‘It offers many classes that teach us about technology, video editing, film, journalism and graphic design.’

The I.B. program is strict and holds high standards, promoting personal development, knowledge, patience, and university preparation. This helps I.B. students become responsible citizens and leaders while developing into engaged critical thinkers and lifelong learners. The IB program is split into two types Middle Year Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP). MYP are students in 9th and 10th grades whose teachers prepare them for college-level work. Students in MYP take a combination of M.Y.P, A.P(Advanced Placement) and A.I.C.E(Cambridge) courses. DP are students in 11th and 12th grades who are required to submit independent essays with 4,000 words to help prepare students for similar assessments in college. To be accepted into the IB program, students must have an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher and an F.A.S.T pm3 score (E.L.A & Math) level 4 or above. The application to be in IB was from December 2, 2024, to January 21, 2025. The open house was on Monday, December 9, 2024, at 6 pm. The magnet program coordinator for IB is William Collazo.

UTAP program trains students to become teachers and future leaders. UTAP offers strict courses and extensive field of experience. Students get hands on experience to teach schools under guidance of experienced educators. To be accepted into the UTAP program, students must have an unweighted GPA of 2.5 or higher and an F.A.S.T pm3 score (E.L.A & Math) level 3 or above.
