The Dead Don’t Rest

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice

The new movie Beetlejuice 2, also known as Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice is the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s classic movie Beetlejuice. It was released on September 6, 2024, in theaters and streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Fandango. The film stars Catherine O’Hara, reprising her role as Lydia’s eccentric mother Delia, and introduces Willem Dafoe as a new villainous character from the afterlife. Fans of the original will enjoy the blend of practical effects and eerie aesthetics. At the same time, Danny Elfman’s Tim Burton returns to direct this sequel, retaining the signature mix of Gothic whimsy and dark comedy that made the first Beetlejuice iconic.

Along with Keaton and Ryder, the film features new cast members including Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter and several celebrity cameos that add humor and intrigue to the story. The score sets the perfect tone, mixing the spooky with the whimsical. Beetlejuice 2 promises to capture the same quirky charm as its predecessor while exploring new adventures in the strange world of the dead.

“I’ve been waiting forever for this movie, and I can’t believe it finally came out I’m so excited to go watch it later,” DBHS freshman Abby Smith said.

This movie picks up years after the original film, focusing on the next generation of the Deetz family. Lydia Deetz, once the goth teenager haunted by ghosts, is now an adult, portrayed again by Winona Ryder. Lydia’s daughter, played by Jenna Ortega, begins experiencing strange, supernatural occurrences in their home. The movie follows her as she accidentally summons the mischievous Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) after repeating his name three times, setting off a chain of chaotic events.

The plot centers around Beetlejuice’s return to the land of the living, as he hatches a new scheme to escape the constraints of the afterlife. Along the way, he causes mayhem for the Deetz family, drawing them back into the surreal, spooky world that exists between life and death. Lydia, now a protective mother, must team up with her daughter to stop Beetlejuice’s wild antics and find peace again.

The movie started production on May 10, 2023, and wrapped in late 2023. Film editor Jay Prychidny admires Tim Burton’s work on these films. As he said, “It’s so wild seeing it with an audience. As the film got more and more refined, the audience engagement got higher and higher. The electric energy in the cinema and the laughter and the applause, that’s so gratifying. That’s really what you’re doing it for, to entertain the audience.”
